Overview.
First it was great fun. Players said they enjoyed it,
not so sure I could get them to play the rules again
though. As it was our first game, & I was the only
one to have even read the rules, I thought it went
quite well. several more reading sessions would
help improve the playing, as would some QRSs
& random cards not hand written by me. These
are on their way, as is the Solo version.
Some of the most enjoyable moments:-
1)The Roles Royce (Armoured tip of the spear),
& on the narrow road to gain the move bonus...
failed time & again to get moving. This caused
an enormous traffic jam. Troops that should have
sped down the road in trucks, guarded by A-cars,
had to debus and march through woods.
2)The ambushed Brits formed up & played the
'Three rounds rapid' card which gives them
effectively a double move of firing...
only to fail their firing test.
Much to the relief of Ian (Westbury) whose
figure was with the target unit.
3) VCs all round to the crew of the Mountain Gun.
Posthumous obviously.
4) Afghan leader (Dice-Master) while separated from
any covering unit becomes victim to the British
playing their 'Sniper' card (Bit unfair as the figure
was brought along as part of his troops) He then
uses his own trait, that of being 'Lucky' to demand
the multiple hits be re-rolled. All then fail.
Any wonder we call him Dice-master.
5) Ambushed officer leading the great skedaddle.
Lost half his force, a field gun & the precious DH2
had to limp home. Explain that one at your Courts
Martial.
6) JC (relief force) was reduced to clambering onto
the lead A-car to direct it forward, only to be attacked
by a large Afghan unit who had managed to get a
double move. First move furious fighting around & even
on the Roles Royce. JC manfully firing his trusty Webley
revolver into the mob while swearing like only a sailor
that's been to Portsmouth can. Helped by the A-car's
MG spewing hot lead & death with gay abandon.
The courage tests at the end of 'Move 1' had the Brits
standing firm, as it should be, while the Afghans were
forced to retire half a move. 'I've still got my second move'
claimed the elated Ian (Westbury) 'AND...the MG is out of
ammo!' What could possibly go wrong for the Afghans?
Well dear reader, they failed their test to charge.
As I said I quite enjoyed the game & would play it again, at
least under the aforementioned conditions. Others will, hopefully
give you their own viewpoint.
