LITTLE WARS (H.G.WELLS) Which version is best?
« on: 15 July 2021, 05:19:12 PM »
Hey gang. We need a copy of Little Wars for research but there are many versions. Can anyone advise to which is the most colorful/ exciting and well photographed / illustrated version?

Thank you kindly.

None of them are colourful - it was printed in 1913!

The best edition is, obviously, the first one, but that will cost you a lot of money.  The reproduction I have is the 1974 reprint  but, as it is in the public domain, there are a lot of reprints available.  You really want one that reproduces it in a reasonable size to get the little margin drawings and photos.

The edition I have is the 1974 one by Arms and Armour Press which is the same size as the original and has very good reproduction but even that one will set you back £40.

A pdf version of the first edition is available at archive.org: https://archive.org/details/littlewarsgamefo00well

I also have a reprint, I think it's from the 1980s - it was not that expensive and does include the drawings and photos.

As a child, I used to have the Britain’s toy 1/32 scale field guns that fired matchsticks. The bigger WW1 howitzer they did fired a plastic shell. Great fun firing it at buildings built of dominoes  lol Looks like you can still get them.
