Army Showcase Isengard (GW LOTR and Victrix)
« on: July 19, 2021, 07:54:00 PM »
Here's my Isengard Army.
I used Victrix Vikings for the Wildmen of Dunland and I included my Mordor Warg Riders which I also use for... you guessed it, Mordor!
I painted these (GW LOTR ones) about 15 years ago but I did a bit of a rush job with the Victrix Vikings last year. I was a little short on Uruk Scout models so I filled out the unit with some Mordor Orc archers that were extras from my Mordor Army.
The banner tops are just bead thingies from a local craft store. the flags are just print offs from the internet but they are attached to the bases using magnets so I can store more efficiently. Otherwise all of the models are hot-glued to the movement trays which makes for a quick set up and easy storage. I does however, not allow for skirmish games without potentially damaging the trays. I usually put 24 foot models on a base (the pikemen only have 20) and for cavalry and monsters I usually use 9 but oce in a while I cheat and put 8.
I am guilty of giving these guys a basic paint job just to get them on the table all those years ago. I have no plans of revisting this army with a paint brush in the foreseeable future.
I use a homebrew ruleset which has a roll off for priority, then you roll a D6 for each command model (D8 for the General) to determine how many units you can activate and a 'rock, paper, scissors' approach to infantry, cavalry, archers (and their subtypes like War Machines or infantry type). There is a difference in troop quality that is reflected by the points value, but for unit type there is no difference in point cost.
I'll write a seperate post if anyone is interested in the mechanics at a later date.
Anyhow, gotta go to the dentist!
Enjoy!

There's nothing like quantity when playing a mass battle game. Great looking units and a none too shabby playing board too

Definitely agree with Little Odo, that’s quite the army and a good looking table overall!

Impressive! Really cool scenes, what a force!

Wonderful work; really impressive collection of Uruk Hai and a great idea to use the Victrix Vikings for Dunlendings.

I went with Victrix Vikings because they were much more affordable than most other lines. I wanted my Dunlendings to look more like the Old Glory Ancient Germans but I didn't feel like sculpting all of the fur coats for them. I think the V Vikings pass as a sort of upper class Dunlending and I had the intention of expanding the army to include about 10-12 units of lower class warriors using some sort of ancient German models. That said, I highly doubt I'll ever do more for this army.
Incidentally, I used the Victrix Saxons for my Rohan foot regiments and I did sculpt capes on all 240 of them. It took a solid 5 hours to sculpt all of those capes.

Heres a few more I took.
