6mm Brigade Landers
« on: August 06, 2021, 02:52:46 PM »
Well, Brigade Models just released some pretty cool 6mm figs for anyone looking to do a "hot LZ" or "evacuate to orbit" scenario:

http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/Blog/2021/08/dropping-from-orbit-2/

Good day to be a Dirtside fan.  There's also their older Hestia gunship if you want some fire support for the transports:

As the site blog notes, you can also get fighter escorts for them in 6mm, and pretty much all of these exist in the adorably tiny "starship scale" so Full Thrust players can get in on the action too:

Sadly, the 15mm version of the Athena dropship appears to be out of stock:

This kind of thing, where a manufacturer makes figs in multiple scales to cater to different tastes and collections?  We could do with more of that.  And yeah, I know, 3D printing lets you re-scale to some degree and is cheaper than buying finished models - but lead will always have a certain appeal.  This site isn't called the STL File Forum, is it now?  :)

I do like Brigades line, still mostly in with the 15mm side of things but 6mm has its appeal and may be a future thing.

I do like companies that do there products in multiple scales.

Ground Zero Games was pretty amazing in that regards. If Jon decided to redo his 25mm range in 28mm I would happily pick some up. Though characterful they're a bit dated, but I have loads of GZG in 15mm and some of the 6mm stuff.

3D print files are incredibly useful and I've got plenty of 3D print stuff, its been revolutionary frankly. Stuff people wouldn't have ever done in lead is now a thing (which has positives and negatives as some of it is incredibly imaginative whereas others, a bit meh). I'm also pretty sure that 3D printing is used as a means to make masters for minis to be later produced in lead, pretty sure Brigade Models is one such company and its why they're able to have consistency across scales.

For better or worse he seems very focused on 15mm at this point, with only the odd Full Thrust release (most notably the Kra'Vak resculpt in late 2018) and nothing for 6mm or 25/28mm in years AFAIK.  Presumably it's where the sales are these days, but it is a shame the other scales (and starships) don't get a little more loving.

True.  The industry is changing and will continue to do so as the tech improves and becomes more widely accessible.  People who don't adapt to it are probably going to be in rough shape if they survive at all.

FWIW, both Brigade and GZG are using increasing amounts of 3D printed sculpting in their masters, although I think both are still relying mostly on traditional sculpting for infantry figs (although not so much on their weapons, in many cases).  3D drafting really does lend itself to mechanical subjects from infantry small arms to tanks to starships.
