Nomonhan Campaign 1939
« on: September 24, 2021, 10:14:47 AM »
I recently heard (literally, it was an audio book) about the Japanese-Soviet war in 1939.  It sounds ideal for gaming purposes.

Has anyone here ever tried it out?

N for Nelly - Nomonham or Khalkin Gol.

I think you'll find this a treat!

Helion & Company has a new book on the subject out in their Asia@War series, though in all seriousness Alvin Coox's research from two decades ago will probably make for a better read.

Actually, it's also just occurred to me that there was a great Khalkin Gol game at Salute back in 2009:

The GHQ TAC News newsletter for November/December 2014 has a scenario for their Micro Armour rules:

Scroll down to see. It's a PDF.

This is all good.  I have enough Soviet stuff, sort of, but no Japanese as yet.

Tank Encyclopaedia has an article on the subject of molotov cocktails used by Japanese troops for anti-tank purposes during those battles: https://tanks-encyclopedia.com/kaenbin/

The Alvin Coox book is your best source, well worth hunting down a copy.

Worth pointing out that nobody I’m aware of does suitable Soviets, save for the execrably sculpted ones available via Company B. Finding suitably attired Japanese is problematic too. Of course if you aren’t anal about such things then ranges abound.

I think Warlord may have some M1936 helmets in their Soviet line, sometimes it's hard to tell what things are meant to be with Warlord.  ;) Not sure if there are enough to kit out all figures though.

Their plastic Japanese are sculpted in tunics so they could be used. Leaving aside the casually racist facial features of some of the sculpts, they aren't the worst offerings out there. Tanks for the period abound, no shortage of choice there including some lovely stuff from Rubicon and Trenchworx.

Always mystified me why nobody does decently sculpted, dedicated Soviet ranges for Nomonhan and The Winter War. Surely there must be a market?

If I do this one it will be in 15mm.  I've not seen specific figures in that scale either.  Nor, so far, suitable Mongolian client state figures.  I suppose I might badger Peter Pig.

All the same it is very tempting.

Northumbria Painting Services does 28mm Japanese that wear tunics with the standing collar and shoulder tabs, should accuracy be a priority.
