(Commercial) Definitely Not Damsels - Bad Squiddo KS
« on: 25 September 2021, 08:02:31 AM »
Hi chums!

We've had as much of a what the heck year as anyone else, but we're doing alright, even moved offices and can wave at North Star from the new place! Woo!

This is the latest Kickstarter project, expanding our fantasy range this time, and bringing light to the ones we have that might not have been noticed. Along with some super cool female minis, we have some brand new scenics too, and a whole bunch of add on bundles.

I'll post more on the lead up, but for now if you're interested, could you click the "notify me" on the pre launch page and it will help the algorithms, and you know algorithms are the new gods!

Hmmm...could be handy to use with some of Crocodile Games' bastet figs if someone wanted to do a contrasting "nudes and prudes" set.  :)

New motto for Bad Squiddo Games?  "Even our catgirls are sensibly dressed!"

Good luck with this, some very useful figures there. The goblin is possibly my favourite though I like the idea of the undead nobles too. You don't see many NPC type undead.

Seconded.  The goblin lass give me a bit of Wagnerian opera vibe for some reason, and it's nice to see more undead that aren't either soldier types or shambling peasant corpses.   The few unarmed undead nobility I have in my collection are all ghostly sorts, having some more material options would be good.

Quite like that Kev White cavalry sculpt, predictably high quality.

I agree and I have pledged for her, despite my theoretical current self-imposed ban on buying new stuff to paint. I am a slow, fairly time-poor painter, and have always been a bit intimidated by cavalry because of the time it would need to actually finish a unit. Ms de Clisson, however, looks worth the effort and will make a great leader of a warband/skirmish force.

I intend to use her primarily for fantasy gaming, but I will need inspiration for the barding on her horse and it makes sense to start with history. Do we know what she colours she and her horse wore in real life?

Not that I know of.  Easy to find the de Clisson family coat of arms (a white lion rampant with a golden crown against a red background) with a quick search, which (given that her notoriety stems from her campaign to avenge her third husband's death) seems like something she'd use.  Her legend and what little artwork there is of her suggests she favored red and black as colors.

A foot version to go with the mounted figure would be great for skirmish gaming.

Not to mention being useful on board the deck of one of her ships if you wanted to game some of her nautical work.  I know she's been somewhat mythologized but it's still kind of hard to see her on horseback during a boarding action.  :)

We've had Jeanne painted and sculpted as close to what we could figure out as historical as possible. Which involved quite a bit of research! Though obviously she wouldn't have had such an elaborate hairdo into battle, that's the sort of thing where we tend to go to symbolism rather than entirely factual, as the symbol makes something more interesting.

Thanks all! I have a painted version to treat you with! John (Mystic Spirals) could have gone all out on the barding but kept it simple so it wasn't too intimidating, and it looks FANTASTIC! And a foot version, ta daaaa!

Also slugs and snails nearly unlocked.

And new bundles of the existing Amazons and Dwarves!

Then... another Kev!

🙋 Q1: "Annie don't you specialise in women.... that are generally more clothed than this?"

Yes, generally! Our main point of reference is "suitably dressed" and the question "would the miniature dress herself like this?" and this passes both! She's a belly dancer, and she owns it!

🙋‍♂️ Q2: "Annie, she is a historical figure from WW1, why is she here?"

Why not? Ok Jeanne and Mari were two Kev White purchases from this year, and he is notoriously expensive but absolutely worth it, and I really wanted these two [three] miniatures made! After the work on Jeanne, I really wanted an excuse to use Kev's skills on femme bodies, as of course the former is head to toe in armour. Mata was perfect for this and it's exactly as I had in mind - look at her lil belly!

So because of this, Ive added her into the Kickstarter for the reason we're doing the whole thing - to raise funds to get them into production, as well as reach more people, as Kickstarters have a much wider reach than standard straight to shop ones. And I'd like to recoup some of those funds faster, so we can get more sculpts, wahey!

Though historical, these "Kevs" fit fantasy settings too, and we are all about versatility in miniatures.  Mata can of course be a belly dancer in your fantasy gaming, but also a magic user, princess, anything! A very timeless look! And of course my historical only customers can be lured over even when they said they didn't need anything....muahaha.

Nice.  I was wondering if that "belly dancer" was going to be Mata, given that very famous photo of her.  Kev's done a great job of capturing her likeness, as one would expect from him.

Also, ooh, snails.  I have a weakness for snails - even very silly snails.  :)
