More from "Campaign to Saratoga - 1777" by Eric Schnitzer and Don Troiani. Schnitzer is a NPS park historian at Saratoga. His lucid and learned writing illuminates the tale and Troiani's well researched artowrk is fabulous.
The 3 New Hampshire regiments had enough bayonets. The Massachusetts regiments did not have nearly enough bayonets. All were indifferently clad, some in regimentals, some in rifle shirts, some in overcoats, etc. As expected, the militia had virtually no bayonets, although regulations said each man was to provide one. The militia came and went according to when they signed up, even if that mean they headed home shortly after arriving at the front.
And then there was Stark, who showed up after his crushing Bennington victory and marched off rather than accept Continental command. He and his force did end up blocking Burgoyne's last escape route.
