New to Rapid Fire!!!???
« on: October 23, 2021, 12:28:26 PM »
Hoe daft's that then? I've just found a 'Rapid Fire' book in the bowels of the Emporium dated 1996, so old the adverts only contain postal addresses! Back in the day I recall perusing them and not finding the rules much cop compared to 'Operation Warboard'.
I'm tempted to dust 'em off and have a go, but wondered is there a sorce on t'internet showing the make up of late war British, American and German units. I'm not that enthused to go buying 97 supplements to have a game of sowjers?
Is it alternate moves, if so shoot then move, move then shoot or whichever is preferred?

This fell through the letterbox yesterday afternoon...

I had an afternoon in the Occifer's Mess comparing it to this...

I'm really impressed how the 'Rapid Fire' rules have transmorgified down the years, I reckon I can get somewhere with these new ones. We've persisted with our 'Old Skool' 'Operation Warboard' rules, till old fartdom's decreed, no more. You have to be eagle eyed enough to distinguish individual weapons, something we're now struggling to do in munchkin scale!
I'm thinking marking the vehicle's stats on it's base will cut down on paperwork, might speed up play too. The rulebook gives a sample of late war British and German units, but sadly none for British Airborne. I'm wondering if there's a download of any kind that shows a British Parachute and Glider Battalion stats. I know a Parachute Battalion was smaller than a regular one, and that a glider borne Battalion somewhat bigger. Can anyone give me a few pointers please?

:)

Don't fancy buying a supplement for two Battalion stats...
us Yorkshire folk aren't famous for throwing our money about.

Looks like you can get individual sceanrios fro Market Garden for £3
Or the whole book for £8
PDFs rather than hard copy but not a bad price

Might be sacrilege, but there are bits of Rapid Fire I have never liked. But these things that irritate me intensely are the exact same things that others like  lol
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

The original Rapid Fire had a weird thing going on with scale; allowed you to have a brigade on the table, yet had rules for rifle grenades. It was pretty obviously a skirmish set which had been bathtubbed to allow big games with lots of toys. I don’t know whether later versions fixed that. We never found the rules terribly satisfactory, but the scenarios are excellent, and work well with Battlefront:WW2 or IABSM with minimal effort

It is a good starter set, but I always felt it was too simplistic and just lacked period flavour. I am not sure about RF2 but in the original set, there was no real difference between how any of the armies played, I remember infantry casualties seemed rather high and tanks could be op.

It was pretty obviously a skirmish set which had been bathtubbed to allow big games with lots of toys.

Kind of how wargaming was back in the day though. Both 'Battle - Practical Wargaming' and 'Operation Warboard' had Battalion sized games, but you still had mini platoons with pistol armed Occifers, Riflemen, Sten and Bren gunners to faff about with.
You can kind of guess our level of advancement, wargaming wise, in that we've only just stopped using Gavin Lyall's rules. Bit sad about that, but we can't differentiate/see the Airfix munchkin weapons anymore! Looking at the latest 'Rapid Fire' rules, I'm thinking they'll be perfect. Get plenty of tackle blasting away on a big table and enjoy playing with the toys.
What I positively won't have in the Emporium, is a rool set which makes you need a brayn transplant halfway through the game, to cope with all the mind numbing charts, statistics and modifiers!

Rapid Fire is a brilliant game, quick to learn the basics, and surprisingly tactical ; for instance playing an armoured force against infantry without their own support can lead to a very one sided affair, especially in Normandy, built up areas et cetera. Time is of the essence when playing limited turns.
