[WIP] Spelunking Diorama
« on: November 19, 2021, 08:51:11 PM »
Dear all,

I recently got into cavernous terrain and bases. It all started with a little spelunking vignette that - as per usual - turned out to be more involved than initially planned.

I got so far to sketch out the lower level, but still have to finish the upper part.

Still, I think it is getting there.

Love the simple colours and shading. Never been bold enough to do a whole table or set of figures that way, but really would love to one day.

Excellent!

I recognize the head of the figure as a Statuesque model, but where's the body from?

Thank you! This will be a display piece only, but an entire army painted as if it is nighttime would be quite interesting.

It is indeed a Statuesque head. The body is LANELLE, HALF-ELF ROGUE by Reaper Miniatures. I modified her pauldrons a tad and gave her a new weapon and the rope.

Thank you! I got around adding the second character and some vegetation to the top level and will now use the airbrush to paint it all with a dark violett and work from there.

That is truly beautiful. An excellent composition, I especially like the little sleeping bat (I hope it’s a bat not just a stalactite!)

Very nice; I quite like the figures and the tree so far. I wonder if they will end up in New Zealand... ().

I am quite happy with the composition myself. Took some trial and error. The painting will be a challenge, but hopefully provide some usefull lessons for future OSL projects. It is indeed a bat, two in fact.

Who knows. I spent a few years in NZ, so would be a match. That movie looks like a hell of a trip.  ;D

Yes some excellent work . Never saw the bat until you mentioned it :o

Really love the odd diorama on this site, wish we did a regular competition dedicated to dioramas similar to the painting competitions just to encourage it a bit more.

Peithetairos

Did you draw any inspiration from this fella’s project?

PS.  Just rewatched the 2005 movie The Cave (currently on Netflix):

So I think it’s time I gave a cave diorama a shot, or at least some cavern scatter terrain pieces.  Thanks so much for the visual encouragement of your diorama!

A ha! I thought it might be a reaper fig.

Love the second figure too, really shaping up well!
