The Fords of Isen in 28mm
« on: 28 September 2009, 02:10:13 PM »
A scenic project I have been working on of late...versatile modular terrain elements to recreate coastline /river banks with a ford. The Fords of Isen as described in Unfinished Tales would seem to fit the bill perfectly.

The whole construct is on 11 bases, with one bank steeper and more rugged than the other and a central Eyot.

Construction is very straightforward, the main contours being made up of polysterene dressed with styrofoam rock faces, covered with paper towel and filler, with poster paint and scatter material on art board.

I have hopefully made it generic enough to use it for some other periods, namely Greek War of Independence in 15mm set in Epirus/Albania and the Back of Beyond in 15mm to double as wilder parts of the Siberian/Mongolian border
Warriors dreams, summer grasses, all that remains

That looks really great, how have you thought about doing the water?

Right, that looks really good. The tiny island for Theodred's last stand is nice. Good job.

I've modelled just enough on each base to suggest the water's edge. I wanted to suggest a bank without having to define the actual extent of the water. That way I could use the banks as either coastline or river banks.

One idea to model the river is to paint a series of flat boards with a water effect with 'wet look' varnish etc. onto which these would sit to create a complete water surface.
Alternatively I could model irregular bases with the same water effect, and include some smaller ones with reeds etc. which could be dotted along the line of the river to suggest a continuous body of water. These could double as ponds/meres in other scenarios.

Storage is an issue so a long long time ago I opted to make all my scenery modular. Inevitably its a compromise and less visually striking perhaps than custom built terrain boards, but hopefully a lot more versatile.

They look great . I think I might copy and leave off the water effect so they can be used for BOB desert terrain as well as river banks.

Alternatively model a small amount of 'water' so you can do streams/rivers in BoB but keep some loose scatter material handy to cover it when you use it for drier scenery!
