I use what's generally called 'lead foil' from the neck of whine bottles or paste tubes or oil paint tubes. It is probably not much lead in these nowadays but some other alloy.

I used to use toothpaste tubes, but they are all plastic these days so they spring back instead of keeping the folds you make in them.

Tomato purée tubes are still made of metal (about the only tube that is now that you'll find lying about the house), so that's what I use nowadays.

Paper folds and creases okay if you prefer to make your design in a graphics package and print it out rather than paint it.

I use plasticard from a blisterpack or somesuch, and put the folds in by wrapping it around a pencil.

I use good quality paper. I always do the front and back together and then fold in half with a good covering of pva to glue together.
When dry it is much stiffer and holds folds and curves very well.

Easy to fold and doesn't bend back.
