Flodden Question
« on: March 26, 2022, 05:15:37 PM »
Does anyone know if the marines that the Lord Admiral brought to the battle from the fleet would have looked like?  Would they have been uniformed in any way?  How heavily armoured would they have been.  One of the sources (Osprey I believe) called them crack troops.  I can't imagine them being elite if they were not heavily armoured.  Thanks for any opinions.

So far as I know they were dismounted Men at Arms so very well protected.

Sailors in the fleet wore the Tudor livery of green and white. Likely armed with bow and bill and potentially quite well equipped with almain rivet and sallet rather than just jacks, splints and brigandines per the bill of the army.

Thank you!  Good to know on the arms and especially on the livery color.  I was hoping to paint some Tudor green and white but didn't know if there were any there or all were on the continent with Henry.  This is a fun project as I am learning as I go.  Most of my knowledge is in medieval armies.  It's great to have a resource like this forum.

Not an original source, I know, but below is a plate from the original Osprey book on the battle of Flodden.  The text indicates that the fellow on the right is a marine from the Admiral's ship.

Thanks, there is a similar photo that I found in Great Battles book covering Flodden.  Looks almost identical.  I have started painted some command for the unit with this scheme while waiting for the rest of my order to arrive.
