(Recommend Me) Heroic 28-32mm Scale Historicals
« on: March 29, 2022, 06:48:43 AM »
I got my first box of Perry Brothers plastics (The English Army, 1415-1429) and found that my clumsy fingers and bad eyes make this kit a bad fit for me.

What historical minis, specifically dark ages to early modern, are on the more heroic scale side? Plastic or metal, it doesn't really matter, but if they look good next to Mordheim and Warcry stuff, that would be great.

I'm not really sure what you are aiming for but perhaps have a look at Front Rank (now carried by Gripping Beast).  They are larger than Perry sculpts, AFAIK.

Gripping Beast is chunkier than some of the others (well, their metals anyways).  However there is a lot of miscast/flash to clean up with their metals.  The plastics depend on the set.

Most historical plastics are more fiddly than GW, by design.  For quasi stuff you might try Frostgrave.  Not really historical, but will scale better and is generally chunkier.

Otherwise, it will depend on time period.

You might be better with metals vs. plastic - like the Gripping beast or Old glory models.

Both have some really nice models (depending on the period you are after) and are much easier to deal with than the fiddly plastic kits.

Old Glory are small, true 25s, and thus may not mix well with Mordheim.  So some caution there if you do want to use them with other lines.  They do also suffer from excess flash, and depending on the range are okay or terrible (their bronze age greeks are some of the worst sculpts ever, but I have some goth cavalry which is serviceable, albeit small).

Crusader makes excellent minis, they scale reasonably well with Perry, Footsore, and others.  They are chunkier than Footsore/Perry, but not by much.  Certainly worth a look.

1st Corps weapons are a bit fiddly, but you might find some stuff with them as well.  There is also Wargames Foundry.  They are a bit pricy, and their sculpts can vary by range, but they do have a large selection.

Footsore makes good stuff as well, although the Baron's War range is more fiddly with weapons and generally skinnier overall.

Here's a few that I would consider on the bigger side of 28mm.

Aventine Miniatures are primarily ancient miniatures, but they recently completed an early Byzantine line and are currently working on steppe warriors that would fit amongst Cumans, Khazars, Avars, and other dark age nomadic peoples. After that are a small foray into goths and lombards.
Gorgon Studios has some Norse warriors with some more fantastical miniatures.
Redoubt Enterprises has Vikings, 16th century, and ECW miniatures that are quite large from what I understand. Their romans at least are especially large.
V&V make resin miniatures that are really nice but being in Ukraine I am not sure if they are shipping.

All of these are pretty comparable to each other: pretty beefy and on the heroic side.

Not really, they wouldn't sell well because the historic universe is all 28mm. I'm a big fan of 32mm and all of my fantasy lines are 32mm, but our historic stuff is all 28mm to fit in with the other ranges. You might want to look for miniatures with less pieces if you find them fiddly, there's a lot of great ranges with one piece sculpts or where you just add the weapon in. Footsore's range has a lot of 1 piece sculpts.

Black Tree Designs are large.  Some folks have had trouble with shipments being delivered on time, but I like their figs a lot.

From my understanding Fireforge Plastics are on the larger end of the scale (and fit with Frostgrave /Oathmark)
The Wargames Atlantic Dark age Irish are a decent size

Sadly early modern is where my expertise lies!
Bicorne, Bloody Miniatures, 1st Corps, Renegade (now OOP) and Redoubt all do big hefty ECW figures.
Redoubt's 3 musketeer range is supposed to be very tall.

TimeLine has the old Jim Bowen range of Border Reivers which are very meaty; and are developing an ECW range in the same style.
Col. Bill's range of Border Reivers is pretty hefty.

Wargames Foundry's range of Elizabethan swashbucklers is big.
Most of the Casting Room miniatures ranges are at the larger end.

Old Glory ranges vary - their Wars of Religion range is tall (28mm+), many others are true 25-28mm
