GURP Supers or Supersystem 4th ed?
« on: April 22, 2022, 02:45:47 PM »
Thinking of getting into Super hero gaming. Was wondering what everyone thought about the
two rule sets GURP supers and Supersystem 4th ed? What would you recommend for someone
just starting out?

Are you looking for a Skirmish game or an RPG?

Skirmish you have Super System, Super Mission Force and Slugfest! all from Four Color Studios. SMF is a less crunchy Super System, Slugfest! is a co-op/solo game.

RPG there is GURP, Icons, Mutants and Masterminds, Marvel, Super Action Role Play (from Four Color studio) and many more.

As a note the Four Color Studios games are by Scott Pyle an active poster here and will usually answers questions for his games. I am also a big fan of his skirmish games. I have Super Action RP game but have not had a chance to play yet.

Looking more for a skirmish type game. Will not be doing any serious RPG with it or campaigns.

I can’t recommend Super Mission Force (2nd Ed.) highly enough: simple, yet layered.  Really captures the feel of comic book fights.

Thanks for every ones input. I ordered two sets Super Mission Force and 3D6 Supers.
I also downloaded a free rule set called Tabletop Titans. Just waiting for figures and rules to arrive.

Let us know what you think.

I know you want skirmish, but if any of our kind readers want to do a Supers RPG, I have to recommend Masks.  It uses the Powered by the Apocalypse system and is a great rules-lite approach to the genre.  You can make a wide variety of characters very quickly with balanced power levels due to the rules-lite system.

Thanks for considering my rules! I would recommend SMF, it plays pretty fast and covers most of your options you would want for a Supers team. SS4 offers extremely detailed character creation, really allowing you to get into fine-grain detail when building your characters.

The combat resolution in SS4 is a little slower than SMF, but both capture the feel of comic book combat.

Let us know how your games go, no matter what rule set you choose!
