Oldhammer Elves NEW UPDATE: Axemen and Spearmen
« on: 11 May 2022, 06:48:20 PM »
I've been working for some years on an Elf force using late 1980s and early 1990s GW Elf figures and this cavalry unit has lain unfinished for 5 years until today! These days they get used mostly in Dragon Rampant but I'm also helping to playlets the Midgard rules by fellow forum member James Morris and such is the nature of those rules that the Old Warhammer World armies would definitely fit! So I've resurrected the project and here we are with the cavalry. Most of the pics show them on their Midgard base, with the last few pics showing them all in line a la Warhammer.

I love the Elf models from this era: the best GW ever made in my opinion and certainly the closest to the descriptions of Elves in Tolkien's work. I've also been repurposing some 1990s High Elf infantry units to fit in with the colour scheme you see here so look out for those coming soon but for now, a big hard, nasty armoured cavalry unit for your enjoyment. The leader is a conversion I'm quite proud of! The banner is handprinted and the shields are 1990s GW Wood Elf decals.

Very nice. I'm impressed you managed to find that many that still had the plastic Lance. I'm a big fan of old citadel miniatures but their late 80s obsession with plastic arms and weapons on metal miniatures was not a great idea.

Indeed! They came in a huge box that I got for a ridiculously low price on EBAY and I was staggered to find (a) that many armoured horses (10 in total!) and (b) enough plastic spears to equip this whole unit amongst the wonders therein. Classic case of seller having no idea what he actually had...

Here are the various hero models I use with my Elf collection. In my Dragon Rampant forces, any model on a 40mm round or 50mm square has multiple strength points (I.e. multiple wounds) and in the upcoming Midgard  rules, heroes are a vital component of the entire thing so need to be on imposing bases.
As always, banner hand drawn and hand painted. The shield has 1990s GW Wood Elf decals on it.

Some of these (the Swordmaster models and the Everqueen model) were painted over 25 years ago but have had their colour scheme refreshed so they can sit with the Wood Elf theme I've used with the proper 80s Oldhammer models in the army. They seem to sit well together despite the gulf of years and my changing painting style...

Rely nice job on those. Subtle painting really works well for these figures. Excellent work.
