Late Roman Armoured Foot archers
« on: 16 May 2022, 02:53:31 PM »
I'm trying to source some late Roman armoured foot archers (as dismounted elite troops) for a 5th century western warlord's force. Aventine do some Early Byzantine armoured foot archers. I've bought some and they are excellent but they do look a bit too  Eastern/Byzantine. I've modded some plastic armoured archers by using parts from some Victrix early Roman archers with some Wargames Atlantic late roman infantry. They are ok but the WA bodies are a bit rubbish; with drooping shoulders and overly long arms.

I've searched the other usual manufacturers but I'm not seeing any obvious candidates. All the archers are unarmoured. The obvious answer will probably be to combine Victrix late roman infantry with their Late Roman archers but neither set is out yet.

Anyone have any ideas where can buy these? Or easily mod/kitbash them?

The only one i found is on the Gripping Beast range of Saga Age of Invasions Late Romans (the roman deserters pack).
Appart from that its converting time.

Bit of a gap in the market then. Where are those 3d printers when you need them!

Oh well, I will just need to find better sources for conversions.

Looks like Victrix are working on some. Don't think there's a release date yet.

Thanks anyway.

Seems Victrix is putting up prices by 10% in June. Hopefully, that means they have a slew of new products, including those Late Romans, to go at those higher prices. Even then though, I'm going to have to combine armoured infantry with unarmoured archers to get what I want. It's an odd gap that there are no archers with mail.

How about Aventine?

Yes, I mentioned those in the OP. Already bought some and they are really nice. Aventine does one pack of 4 with Eastern heads and another with more Western type helmets. Overall though they do look a bit more Eastern Roman than Western and possible more 6/7th century than 5th. They also have all have a very similar pose since they are meant to used as the back rack of an infantry unit.

Nonetheless, right now they are still my best option.

A and A have suitable figures

Do they? I could only find Middle Roman armoured archers with an Eastern type helmet but I may have missed something. Have to admit didn't even look at A&A website so thanks.

They could probably be kitbashed into something more Western. I tried something similar with Victrix Early Imperial Armoured archers.

Sorry, you did too.  That will tech me to post when at work.  Apart from the lack of poses, I don't think they look too eastern.
Would Norman archers with Westwind or some other suitable head work?

Now those are a useful find. A nice simple body in mail. I've got a lot of spare plastic late roman helmeted heads from a few test sprues I bought. So with a bit of decapitation that could well do. Thanks very much.
