Perilous Island 4: Manhunt
« on: June 14, 2022, 06:06:37 PM »
On Sunday the kids and I continued our Perilous Island campaign. To prepare I painted up these 5 sailors to use as plot points.

Meet Sampson, Flat face Jones, Marconi, Captain Ito and Hans.

Both leagues used resource points for this scenario. The Steele’s invested in some gadgets to help them pass perils and challenges, and a level 3 backup shooter. The Cult of the Emerald Scorpion brought along a level 3 scout and a gadget to pass a peril.

For those who came in late…
Guy Steele and his friends retreated from the warehouse and after patching up their hurt, opened Darrow’s box. It contained a stone idol and a dozen photographs of strange ruins and prehistoric beasts. How could such things exist? The package offered no clues to Lord Darrow's current whereabouts. However, the smeared label indicated the originating location as the city of Ponta Delgada in the Azores, an island chain long considered by many to be potential remnants of Atlantis, perhaps the peaks of its highest mountains left exposed after the sinking of the mainland.
Using the address on the package sent to E.J. Demas, the Steeles soon arrived in Ponta Delgada. Inquiries into Lord Darrow’s activities revealed that he had befriended a mad Old Sailor who spoke of a lost island inhabited by man-eating lizards, tribes of flesh hungry cannibals, and unfathomable terrors.
Lord Darrow spent many weeks alone with the Old Sailor before departing on his expedition to locations unknown. Although the Old Sailor departed with Lord Darrow, he mysteriously reappeared with two other members of the Darrow Expedition in a local hospital, the Old Sailor nearly blinded by exposure from the sun.
After the mysterious deaths of the other two survivors, the Old Sailor escaped the hospital. Most accounts indicate that he fled to one of the smaller islands to take refuge with some old crew mates. The Steeles take up the hunt in a small fishing village on the island of Flores. Can they find the crazy Old Sailor and find out what he knows? Or will the Scorpion Master show up once more and stop them?

Location: A fishing village on the island of Flores.

The 5 sailors are about their business when our heroes enter the scene. Ruairidh spotted Marconi unloading his truck and moved to talk to him. He climbed into the back of the truck, careful not to spook the man. Suddenly he heard the movement of mechanical legs and turned to see one of the scorpions coming for him. How had the Scorpion Master found them here? He’d have to think about it later. He turned Morag towards the beast and squeezed the trigger. Bullets bounced off the metal carapace as it closed on him, having little impact. The machine climbed into the truck with him and he attacked with the stock of his gun. He managed to flip the thing over but as he did it caught him a glancing blow with its stinger, not enough to kill but enough to drop him to the ground.

Penny and Lady Elaine saw Captain Ito in the marketplace and started towards him when they noticed a green robed cultist with a Thompson heading down the street towards them. They darted into cover, hoping it would be enough to discourage the man from shooting at them. Their hope was in vain. The cultist lowered his weapon, ready to fire, but was distracted by the gunfire directed at him by a newcomer. It was an old friend of the Steele’s who had accompanied them to the village. He blasted away with his twin .45s, buying time for the ladies. Unfortunately the cultist was not distracted for long and quickly fired back. His aim was truer and his opponent fell hard and did not rise again.

Major Mallory positioned himself in the tower, the perfect place for him to provide covering fire for his friends. As the cultists moved into the open he would be able to pick them off. His first opportunity came when one of them started to cross between the roofs of the buildings. Mallory dropped him in one shot.

Guy himself went straight for Sampson, who was recovering from last night’s hangover on a roof. Crossing over left him exposed and he drew some fire but managed to emerge unscathed from the action.

Molly had observed Hans winding some rope on one of the jetties and made her way towards him. At the same time the Scorpion Master and some of his minions were trying to get to Flat face Jones. As soon as the enemies saw each other they opened fire with everything they had. The Master and Molly wounded each other but not enough to delay them from their tasks.

As the action began to heat up Penny raced towards Captain Ito. She had half convinced him to talk to her when the burly cultist with the tommy gun came charging up the street. He pushed her roughly out of the way and grabbed the startled seaman by the arm, forcing him to go along with the evil cult. Knowing that she was ill equipped to stop the big man in green, Penny turned and ran.

Guy jumped down on the roof beside Sampson and convinced him to tell him what he knew of the missing sailor. He then moved to the adjacent building and took out a cultist who was hiding there. Behind him a different cultist raised his shotgun, ready to blast our hero off his feet, when a shot rang out from the tower. The cultist fell as Mallory’s shot hit home.

Along the docks a heavy firefight was underway. Molly grabbed Hans and ushered him to safety as the Scorpion Master let loose with everything he had. As he was keeping Molly engaged, his mercenary convinced Flat face Jones to give up the location of the mad old sailor. The Scorpion Master had the information that he had come for! All he had to do now was keep the hated Steeles from getting it too.

Hearing the growing commotion at the water front, Lady Elaine decided to offer her aid. She moved to the wall and fired her pistol at the Professor, wounding him. Her bravado would cost her. The clanking movements of a mechanical monster caught her eye. One of the scorpions was heading right for her. It appeared that Ruairidh had been overcome by the beast, freeing it up to wreak more havoc on the Steeles and their friends.

Knowing she couldn’t survive in the open, Molly leapt to the stone archway, taking advantage of the cover it provided to keep her safe. The Scorpion Master was determined to exact his revenge on the redhead for all the times she had foiled his plans in the past and moved into a better position to attack her. He blasted away with his weapons but was unable to lay her low. Behind him his robotic minion finished off Lady Elaine as the Professor rose to his feet, driven more by fear of his master than the pain of his wound.

In his tower Mallory watched as Molly dove for cover. He turned his attention from the shotgun cultist on the roof to the group around the Master. By a stroke of luck he got the Master in his sights and fired. His answer was the sound of bullets impacting the stonework around him as the Master turned his attention to the unseen source of his new pain. Mallory hid behind the pillar and trusted its protection, grateful for the relief he had given Molly.
Mallory’s actions gave the shotgun cultist time to recover and he quickly moved away from the line of fire he had been in. As he did so he caught sight of Penny running along the street below. He lifted his shotgun over the wall and fired. Luckily for Penny, the man’s aim was off and the young girl got away without a scratch.

Guy Steele climbed down the wall of the building that he was on to the street below, desperate to do whatever he could to help Molly. She saw him coming and broke from cover, running under fire. He positioned himself between her and the evil cultists, drawing their fire as he did so. As more cultists emerged from the streets to back up their master, including another robotic scorpion, Guy and Molly decided that discretion was the better part of valor and best a hasty retreat. They would have to learn the location of Darrow’s expedition another way.
