Ok, here's my entry. I want to transform this farm harvester (5€ in Toys R'Us, it's from their toy line)
into a dropship
I've already started working on the project:

I love it. It will be like a sort of a early Dr Who prop
...I imagine, being no expert on Dr Who. But you know what I mean, that old SF film adaptation tradition of turning junk yard parapinalia into futuristic super technology : hair dryers becoming ray guns etc.

That's excellent! Too bad there's no Toys R' Us anywhere remotely near my isolated corner of the granola-eating-tree-hugging-commie province... I'd so 'borrow' the idea for later use.

Ok, just a quick update with my newly bought "engines" (aka cheap garden hose connections). They are going to be positioned that way, but right now they are just blue-tacked.
A frontal view (that's going to be the cabin):
With the "fuel probe" deployed:

Oh yes, or hows about what I thought they were at first glance - kids binoculars?
Look forward to seeing this continue.

I'm slowly building up the sides of the "dropship". Because I'm lazy and I don't know how to cut styrene, I ended up using old Tente pieces (Tente are spanish-made "Legos") and old cd cases.
First, some Tente glued on the body of the ship:
On both sides:
And then some cds cases cut and glued into position (at least on this side. The other is going to be problematic)
I've also made some "glass" for the cockpit, using some cd cases leftovers (with a frontal view of the "dropship"):
And that's all for now. I don't have enough free time to do more work :\

Looks like an interesting build.
What size is it? Any chance of a photo next to a figure?
Cutting styrene is a lot easier that trying to cut CD cases. CD cases are a brittle plastic where as styrene sheets are more pliable. The best way to cut styrene is just to score the plastic a few times then snap it off. The break line follows the score mark in the styrene.
If you try the same with the CD cases the lines are harder to score and a lot of time when you snap it off the break does not follow the score line because it is two shallow.
Good luck with the build.

I guess it is a matter of taste. There are different brands of acrylic glass, yes they are generally more rigid than styrene.
The matter is whether You want the material plyable or stiff. The rest is experience. Usually acrylic edges are more easilly to get perfectly straight.
But since architectural modellers work mostly with acriylic (when using plastic), I guess it can work just fine.
There is also the question what kind of prefabricated parts You are using for conversions - if they glue better with acrylic, then You better use it. Same thing with styrene or forex.
