They come up really well using my usual method; block basic colour, Agrax Earthshade wash, then highlight face.

They look quite good. Your results far exceed what your method would suggest.

Is there any indication as to whether their historical kits are compatible with their science fiction kids?

These look really nice. One of my projects for the future is a sort of Warhammer Empire army using third party models and these have suddenly leapt into the running as a possible set to use- I do like Waegames Atlantic sets.
