GAZ AA vs Opel Blitz
« on: 25 July 2022, 01:28:17 PM »
Hello,

Can someone post a picture of an Opel Blitz truck side by side with a GAZ AA or AAA truck? I’ve built both model in 1/72 (PSC kits). The GAZ models are rather small. Did I get a box filled with 15mm models? Is one or the other of these kits is either oversized or undersized?

Thanks for the help,
Cheers! 8)

Don't have a photo but Wikipedia gives the following dimensions for the

Opel Blitz - Length 237 in (6,020 mm)  Width 83.6 in (2,123 mm)  Height 99.2 in (2,520 mm)

GAZ AA -     Length 210 in (5,335 mm)  Width 80.3 in (2,040 mm)  Height 77.6 in (1,970 mm)

So the GAZ would be noticeably smaller in length and height, less so in width.

Does that help any?

That looks about right.  As previously mentioned, the GAZ was smaller than the Opel.

Well with what Itoriel supplied us with and your pics we are on the small side for the GAZ.

5mm short on length
3mm short on width
2mm short on height

Sure it is not to much of a issue it is as if the GAZ is more a 1\76 model.

Thanks for the replies. As you can tell by the pictures, I wanted to use the GAZ AA and AAA trucks for my German army...

And a couple of interesting camouflage patterns for captured German Gaz-AA:

This is a bit misleading: The shown Opel Blitz is the 1.5ton payload version, which is significantly smaller than the 3ton version shown as plastic model in the model comparison shot.

Whatever the size of the trucks to one another may be, the point is that if the Opel is 20mm 1/72 then the GAZ is definitely not 15mm.

Actual dimensions are as follows:

Opel Blitz 3 tonne
Length   6.02 m
Width   2.26 m
Height   2.17 m

GAZ-MM
Length   5,335 mm (210.0 in)
Width   2,040 mm (80.3 in)
Height   1,970 mm (77.6 in)

Fantastic sources/photos as always Cuprum.

I think your maybe right about the scale with the GAZ being a 15mm, if you look at the tyres on the GAZ in the photo there larger than the Opal tyres, but your models there's quite a difference the other way.

So looks miscaled to me I'm afraid.

... Sure it is not to much of a issue it is as if the GAZ is more a 1\76 model.

My opinion on the subject changes from day to day… sometime I look at the models and think they (the GAZ AA/AAA) are on the small side but, still OK for 20mm. other day I look at them and wonder if the content of the box was misplaced… both the Opel and the GAZ models came in a box with the red band of PSC’s 1/72 line of products.

EDIT: Thanks, cuprum for the pictures. Especially the ones showing the two real things side by side… even if they are not exactly the same model as the kits. I have downloaded quite a few pictures from the web for colors inspiration. I decided to do the first one in grey, but the others will be painted in camo scheme.

I still maintain that it is 1/72nd look at the height difference in the people...

Also, PSC don't do 1/76, so not sure why that was even mentioned.
