Coastal or Sea mat recommendation
« on: September 08, 2022, 11:42:59 PM »
Hi I have a small fort on  a rocky outcrop that I want to place on some "water".
Can anyone recommend a good sea mat or even one with a bit of beach or coast ?
Many thanks guys.

Tiny Wargames have some lovely mats.

I ordered a mat from Tiny and got nothing but broken promises and prevarications.

Nice mats, erratic service, in my experience.

Will check them out but sounds a bit dispiriting.
Thanks all

Loke Battlemats has a variety of coastal maps, including Coast of Dread boxed set:

Terra Tiles will have a coasts set on pre-order. Beach and cliffs varieties. https://ravenkeep.net/

For most games I have blue-green tarps, it's very simple but it looks quite good on pictures.

We put the greenish side on top when action takes place in NW Europe

...and the blue side on top for Caribean pirate games.

And ...one of our gamers made a real sea from ...toilet paper! but that's much more work (and I wouldn't have done it)

I bought a seascape printed table cloth off of Amazon. It was very affordable, around $12 if I remember correctly.
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

Geek Villain would be another source, with a better rep than Tiny.

I really like the Cold Waters fabric mat I got from Cigar Box. It's low pile fleece and a good grey-blue if you want a northern ocean look like for the Atlantic/North Sea/English Channel.

Review and photos here: http://www.warbard.ca/2021/02/23/cold-waters-ocean-mat-review/

Cigar Box also do at least two or three other variations on the theme of "sea mat" in different colours of water.

The blue and green tarps and the seascape cloth all work well - I think because they have a bit of a shine to them. Which gives the look of water - as much as the colour.

Which you won’t get on a single material mat, which is part patterned to look like land and part to look like sea.  So then you have to deal with the transition. I think patrice has gone full terrain tiles - but on marinas_gamers board it looks like you have some beach terrain pieces, to cover the join?

Fred,
That is correct. There are two mats with some beach terrain that joins them. I also use sea walls for urban areas.

I think patrice has gone full terrain tiles

We use 32mm thick tiles (not so thick on the sea coast and river banks). Also, an other idea we had for a game, we made a few card sheets, painted and sand-covered, as this one. The idea was to simulate the tide effect. :D When the game begun, the two players who were supposed to reach the place with their boats were unhappy to see it and said "that's stupid we cannot enter the place, etc." and the GM answered: just wait for the tide (and then the sand was removed).
