Early Imperial Roman Cavalry 28mm

Hi Guys
I was thinking of doing a Skirmish Level Imperial Roman Force for "Infamy Infamy"
I am going to use Victrix for the Rank and File.
However I am not sure about their Cavalry..
So Any suggestions about which Cavalry figures , from other brands  may be nice ?
Please let me know.

Aventine miniatures EIR Cavalry look superb.

I would also go with Aventine. A nice range at good prices.  Foundry are also nice but quite small and very expensive. Avoid the Warlord metals like the plague. They look very nice on the website but come as separate torsos and legs which are a nightmare to stick together plus the cast metal spears are very, very fragile.

I just got the Wargames Atlantic horses plastic set.   Lovely horses and huge range of permutations in assembling them.   Some companies, including Aventine are willing to sell their riders separate to horses.    My Aventine riders fit the WA horses.

I did wonder about the new Wargames Atlantic horses, thanks to sgzleada71 I now know they are good too!

I have both the Victrix infantry and Cavalry and must say I like them but the horses ears look a bit strange, set as they are flat and right angled to the head but that's my only criticism.

I don't have any Aventine cavalry but from what I've seen they don't look any smaller than A&A and some of the earlier Foundry horses. Horses back then were fairly small, many were more like large ponies.

The Aventine Hellenistic horses I have - which are probably the same basic sculpts they use for the Romans - and the A&A MIR horses are a very close match in size. If you want bigger options, then - in addition to the Wargames Atlantic plastics mentioned - you could try Aventine's new Dark Ages horses, which are noticeably taller than their Hellenistic beasties or the A&A offerings.

I can't speak for Aventine EIR or their horses. I have Aventine Early Byzantines on their Dark Age horses and I really like them. I also bought a sprue of Wargames Atlantic Horses just to see how they looked. They look good but they were too wide to fit my Aventine Early Byzantine riders. Perhaps Aventine EIR riders have a wider stance though.

I don't have any Aventine EIR either, but their Byzzies definitely have a narrower stance than their Hellenistics.

Aventine Romans are from Trajan onward and you can use the whole range for Marcus Aurelius on. The horses are smallish indeed but so where most of the breeds used at the time, except for cataphractarii-clibanarii maybe and if Nisaian like breeds where available. The true specimen of the latter in the Sassanian range are not that huge either by the way...

I really wanted to like the WA horses, as the idea of separate generic horses is a great one but I just can't look past how the reins connect to the bridle and not the bit.

Plisken, I probably wouldn’t have noticed that detail on my own. And now I’ll never be able to not notice it when I look at those horses. I’m not sure whether to thank you, or swear at you
