21st Lancers for Sudan
« on: November 09, 2022, 06:59:04 AM »
Hi chaps. Hoping for some advice please. Got to paint some 21st Lancers for the Sudan. Looking at different uniform plates, the colour of the uniform varies between a stone type of colour to a yellowish/beige.
I tend to use Games Workshop paints as they are easily accessible for me.
I’m torn between Karak Stone or Zhandri dust.
Any comments/advice would be much appreciated

i've no idea what hues those Citadel paints are so can't really help.

Could you post up a picture of the paints please?

My understanding is Khaki in the British/Indian armies wasn't really a  set colour. Until the early 20th century most regiments in India  originally had to dye their own Khaki so the colour wasn't really set and when you add in weathering through sun, rain and dirt I don't think there is really a right answer any sort of yellow brown through to almost cream for faded uniforms wouldn't be wrong for 19th century British

Who makes these? I'm curious as I don't recall seeing any. Struggling to remember who even makes a figure range for this conflict.

I'd go with a sandy-beige. That's what all the artists of the time went with, and every colour plate I've ever seen. Movies, too. Not familiar enough with current GW paints to recommend anything, unfortunately.

Thanks for the replies guys. I suspected it was a case of uniforms being sun bleached etc. These are the colours I was thinking of.

I think either would be fine. Or a mix of the two if you can't decide.  :)

Karak Stone will highlight to a dirty cream as it has a green tone. Zhandri Dust has an obvious yellow tone so will highlight to a pale yellow.
If you paint uniforms to parade look then go with the brighter Zhandri, if you go for a campaign look then the more muted Karak would be better.
