And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Grant was one of greatest generals. Sadly, the Lost Cause has done him a disservice.
Thanks for the article.

The whole butcher thing is a lost cause myth. "Grant the Butcher" characterization just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. In the five major operations Grant conducted in the west before facing Lee, Grant's total casualties were about 35,000. Lee during the same period approached 90,000. Grant's casualty numbers during the Overland campaign were much higher 126,500 compared to Lee's 71,000. There are two reasons for Grant's higher number, the AOP was twice the size of the ANV and Grant was facing Lee.  Proportionally the ANV took the most casualties. Every general that faced Lee had higher casualties. If memory serves, if you were a soldier in the ANV you had a 77% chance of becoming a casualty. Worse for officers.

Nice article.

And it upholds my belief that now that the vast majority of the "unreconstructed confederates" and "lost cause" advocates, if not silent, are less strident, that we shall see a great deal of reconsiderations of the history of the American Civil War.  It always bemused me how such a "bumbling" Union army won the war.  I'm pretty sure they bested the Confederates a whole lot more than otherwise.  I suspect in the next couple of decades there will be new - and much more balanced (hopefully) - studies of the military side of the war.
