1970-80 Ford Transit van colours
« on: April 16, 2023, 09:32:48 AM »
I have a number of Crooked Dice's vans
Quote
Ford Transits are used in 95 per cent of bank raids. With the performance of a car, and space for 1.75 tonnes of loot, the Transit is proving to be the perfect getaway vehicle", describing it as "Britain's most wanted van".

But I was wondering what colours are in period?

Mid to late 'eighties is the beginning of the owner-driver period (aka White Van Man), but prior to that what colour would best suit the period?

As an additional question, would they have been in British Army service in the late 'seventies/early 'eighties?

You'll be safe with Beige. 70's Britain was universally Beige.

Reference Ford transits being used in the forces I remember the RAF and the Navy using them but cannot remember the Army using them? The next model the Mark II was used by the army. Saying that I bet somebody has a picture or memory of one ?

The majority of the ones we saw over here were factory painted white but I seem to recall a ghastly shade of blue not dissimilar to the one you have painted. You still see the odd one in use as ice cream vans around here, there was one that used to do its circuit near my old house.

'Industrial Yellow' was another popular colour for Mk 1 Transits.

From a quick google, these were the standard colours in 1965:

Ambassador Blue
Fjord Blue
Galleon Green
Merchant Fawn
Cargo Grey
Monaco Red
Ermine White
Highway Yellow

I was aware of the forces using the Leyland Sherpa in numbers, but the Transit is a new (and interesting) one on me. What roles were they used for?
Proudly not painting Wars of The Roses since... ever

Can't get a better period reference source than The Sweeney!

As you say, the Sherpa was the van of (very poor) choice for the Forces.  Transits seem to have been a 2000s thing.
