Paul Hicks' WW2 British Airborne
« on: 07 May 2023, 11:16:13 AM »
Okay, so not his KS stuff, which I will no doubt get onto at some point later in the year (or maybe next year), but some practice pieces to get my hand in ready for when they do arrive.

First off is the Limited Edition duo Paul did for DKMS, a blood disorder charity (which coincidentally I was already a donor for!), based on Al Murray and James Holland, from their 'We Have Ways of Making You Talk' podcast.

While rooting through my unpainted box, I found a mystery loader and finally realised he was part of a pair, for a 2" mortar dude I had done years ago, without realising he was meant to have a buddy. Here they both are, reunited at last.

Here's a running Bren team ...

... but also with another surprise from my unpainted box - a Polish friend for the gunner! Until I was starting to undercoat, I hadn't noticed he was a Polish para with the slightly different beret, so I decided to paint him up anyway.

And the last of this batch was another Bren team, but this time prone, in plenty of plaster dust.

In case you were interested, these guys are only the latest additions to my Paul Hicks British Airborne, making this a rare case of me actually painting more than a smattering of any one genre for myself. Here's an old photo of a selection of those on my shelf.

And here's the howitzer.

'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

Thanks guys! I forgot to mention, James Holland's figure is taking a very relaxed attitude to uniform, in his cricket jumper, cords and dapper brown leather shoes. I've painted him in a Chalke Valley Cricket Club jumper (the team James Holland plays for) and with insignia on his battle blouse marking him as a lieutenant in an Airborne Reconnaissance unit (hence the goggles) who has been separated from his jeep. Whether he can be persuaded to act as temporary a loader for Corporal Murray's PIAT remains to be seen.

Morning Cubs, mouth watering figures  there matey. Can the DKMS figures still be gleaned, as I'd like a couple?
I'm thinking, the bloke in the jumper could be a base for a Major Gough. The Recce CO was well known for his cavalier attitude to uniform! Come to think on it, did I send you the Freddie Gough interview with the Arnhem bumph?

Fabulous work - I particularly like the faces, really brings the figures alive. The camo excellent too, because, like the real thing, the colours don't pop, they are subdued but still distinct. A level for us all to aspire to,

Whoa, thanks guys, that's a flattering outpouring of love.

The camo excellent too, because, like the real thing, the colours don't pop, they are subdued but still distinct.

Thanks, I use washes/inks for the green and brown patches because it gives the right effect and is embarrassingly quick and easy to do. If anyone's interested in the general method I use with the British Airborne, I did a PDF a few years back and I'll add the link at the bottom of this post if anyone wants to try it out.

Can the DKMS figures still be gleaned, as I'd like a couple?

Unknown - certainly not from the regular source, because I think I got the last spare set when my first pair got lost in the post, but it's possible some people who bought them don't want theirs any more.

I'm thinking, the bloke in the jumper could be a base for a Major Gough. The Recce CO was well known for his cavalier attitude to uniform! Come to think on it, did I send you the Freddie Gough interview with the Arnhem bumph?

You know better than me then, I just painted him as Airborne Recce because of the goggles! I had to ask Paul Hicks what was going on around the belt area, because I just couldn't work out what was going on until he told me it was a cricket jumper. You may have sent him in the bumph, I forget if I'm honest.
