basically yes, as far as only the appearance is involved.

What I need the fake chain for is to use it to couple railway components.

In reality, this occurs through sprung buffers put under tension by a flexible link, a combination that adapts to rail curves.
There are sprung buffers available for railway modelling (basically a miniaturized real version), but this level of detail is far too elaborate and expensive for my purpose.
So I have to stick to the fixed buffers and provide a stiff link (usually achieved through sprung connection bars in miniature) that keeps the necessary distance between the buffers.
However, I would prefer to have an authentic appearance, like chain put under tension, but this has to be stiff and stable enough to allow pull and push.

So I need fake chain - the best would be fake metal chain of appropriate thickness as used on certain miniatures, cut into suitable length (but any stiff material would do)

thus my question

fantastic - this is it!
hopefully not too thin, but this shouldn't be a problem, since linking can be provided by suitable chain loops

Thank You very much :)

Magister Militum has chains too. They have double links so they're quite strong. I have some in my large box of random things. Close up pics can be arranged.

Here's something I've found:

http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/25acces.htm

It is a pretty good price for 1m length of it.

couldn't you stiffen actual chain by giving it a coat of very runny superglue?

Or wood glue diluted with some water and a touch of dish soap? Well, actually I've not tried this with small chain, but it works quite well for protecting fragile doodads on terrain and bases with a few layers brushed on.
Everything is better with lizardmen.

Myself, I'd go with Sangennaru and Bako's suggestion, but there is
03076: Weapons Pack V - Spiked Chains from Reaper if you prefer.

thx everybody, I think I'll do well with the two suggestions.
electric trains are more powerful than one would expect.
I did experiment with a piece of brick to block the track and the loco pushed it off without derailing, so no glueing flexible chain I'm afraid.

but let's get back to the flexible link, which was asked for originally

Was recently at Michael's and found this forged chain which is really very nice and available in a couple of different sizes.

Its also available in brass(gold) finish as well as a more pewter/silver look.
