Personal AARs from the War of the Roses?
« on: June 16, 2023, 03:25:40 PM »
Hello!

This is Jack from Masterstroke Games, long time lurker. We're a small team doing a game called Force of Virtue. The game is focused on the Italian Wars and currently specifically Roses.
However a there has been a lot of interest from players in us doing Wars of the Roses. However being originally Swiss most of my research and background is based around central Europe.

We try and rely on first hand accounts of actions and chronicles of smaller engagements rather than the battles to build the card decks for our game. There are a fair few good ones for Italy and Switzerland, the Schilling Chronicles, Montluc, Bayard, Cellini etc.

For War of the Roses I've struggled to find those kind of biographic accounts beyond the Paston letters which are a treasure trove, but gathering as much as I can. Froissart is useful but a bit late and a bit fanciful at times.

Considering this is a very well read corner of the hobby I wanted to check in what sources others might have stumbled across. I'm happy to dive into middle English if necessary.
Regards, Jack

I like swords, hitting people with swords, riding horses and riding horses while hitting people with swords... and long walks on the beach... with swords... preferably on a horse.

I know of the percy neville and Bonville–Courtenay feud. And the Lisle-Berkeley dispute. Which I believe are the well know family fights. I will have to look to see if there are any books about them.
And welcome to the lead adventure forums.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

The Pastons are it! There are no other first hand accounts.
I have a bad case of prescient nostalgia. The future's not what it used to be.

After a bit of research I discovered the Stoner letters  and Cely letters. But they take place after the WOTRs and deal more with economic and legal matters.
