Generative AI as GM
« on: July 06, 2023, 05:03:57 PM »
A question really,

Has anyone tried running a solo-wargame where a Generative AI (EX: ChatGPT) was the GM for you?

Obviously, there are some drawbacks, but if you theoretically fed it the right information it could act as a randomizer of outcomes.

For example, your model encounters a random event token.  You ask the AI to generate the challenge for you to resolve.

If you have tried it, what was your experience like?

I'm in the process of writing my own program that will connect scenarios in LOTOW (wild west) and generate non-player characters and posses if needed. Chatgpt is great for filling in random tables and describing scenes, fleshing out characters and invent reasons why someone would want to ambush that particular stagecoach, etc.

I mainly use chatgpt to bring RPG elements into the game, e.g. generate several NPCs in a saloon that react either friendly, neutral or hostile to the player and spread three rumors each, two of which are true and one false to tell a story.

In my opinion, Chatgpt is very good at generating random information, but very bad at making decisions on given facts  and planning longer-lasting actions, or even remembering it at all.

If the Chatgpt ever asks

'Shall we play a game?' ... never choose Global Thermonuclear War.

Well, for RPG's, like D&D, ChatGWhateverT worked out well:
https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/zpepxi/i_played_dnd_with_an_ai_robot_and_it_was_amazing/

There's also an AI for roleplaying:
https://aidungeon.io/

Speaking of roleplaying... I already posted elsewhere how ChatGWhateverT was lacking in creating strategy for an opponent, but came up with some neat random tables to add fluff text to Campaign Activities in "Five Leagues from the Borderlands". Here's a table if you picked the "Hard Work" option (to get some gold marks).

Hard Work: Complaints an adventurer would say when faced with hard work:
1. "I didn't know 'heroic deeds' included unclogging toilets. I hope the kingdom appreciates this."
2. "I've fought dragons and survived deadly traps, and now I'm reduced to battling a mountain of dirty dishes!"
3. "I didn't sign up to be an adventurer to find myself in the never-ending quest of folding laundry. It's like fighting an army of wrinkle monsters!"
4. "I've traveled through realms and conquered ancient tombs, but untangling this mess of ropes is beyond my expertise."
5. "Saving the world is one thing, but removing stains from these clothes requires otherworldly powers!"
6. "I can slay demons with my eyes closed, but peeling potatoes? That's a skill I never mastered."
7. "I thought my days of cleaning were behind me when I left the village, but here I am, scrubbing floors like a novice bard seeking a gold piece."
8. "I guess they don't teach 'How to wield a sword while mopping' in adventurer training. It's a missed opportunity, really."
9. "I've braved haunted forests and crossed treacherous mountains, but assembling this furniture might be my greatest challenge yet."
10. "Who needs magical artifacts when you have the power to move piles of dirt from one spot to another? Truly, my powers know no bounds."

Now back to the original topic... :D

Bloody hell, is this AI/chatbot a parent to kids of any age? Though it sounds suspiciously like teenage or slightly older kids  lol

Just remember to switch the laptop off when ChatGPT says. "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that". ;)
