* Rampant family games at 12pts?
« on: 18 August 2023, 06:53:34 PM »
There’s a suggestion in the rules to play with 12pts while building up your forces, or simply if you don’t have enough for a full 24. Or maybe you’re splitting 24 into two warbands so a buddy without minis can play.

Either way, has anyone played any of these games at 12pts? 16? Can you build interesting forces at this lower limit? Do they still play well?

I think it would play better with half size units and strength points (ie each model is 2 strength)

Yes, I'd go half sized units too. Twelve points is only 3-4 units, so not a lot of decision-making involved.

Half sized units are a great idea.

Has anyone tried these games using only Single Model Units? So each side only had 5-7 models. Almost like a gang level skirmish game.

I recall that someone did exactly that for Dragon Rampant and posted extensive reports here a few years back. It seemed to work just fine. Mechanically, the game will be just the same (give or take the odd interaction with terrain).

I've played quite a few games with many reduced-point units, and they've always gone just fine.

One thing I'd add from experience is that 24 points a player really seems to be the sweet spot with the Rampant series (odd, that, as it's the recommended size!). We went the other way for a long time, playing much bigger games. But when we cut back to 24 points each, the experience was much better. So I reckon single/reduced-model units is a better plan than fiddling with the points total.

Thematically it works great with single model units on one side (the heroes!)  and the other full strength (the canon fodder!)

I have with a Mecha based game and it worked fine and made the mecha resilient to damage.

This is interesting. This would be like using my Battletech models as SMUs with the Xenos Rampant ruleset?
