Wash Suggestions for 1/200 scale

Well met all. I did the initial paint-up on some Blood Red Skies wildcats and zeroes. But not sure which washing technique I want to use. I think oil wash makes the most sense but open to suggestions from other folks' experiences.



Water catastrophe with the decal sheet so I hand-painted line markings but happy enough with the base coat.

Can't be of much help on the wash front - though you may want to identify how you painted your planes to get a better response (airbrush, type of paint, brush paint, etc.)

I would like to know source of the planes - who made them?

I used GW Nuln Oil or Drakenhof Night as a pin wash on my 1/300 stuff, worked out ok, but required a steady hand! One probably gets away with being a wee bit more impressionistic at 1/300 than 1/200.

Those are looking lovely so far, incidentally I'm working on some 1/200 scale stuff myself, to add to my mate's Wings of Glory collection and expand our options. I'd forgotten the BRS stuff was the same scale, 1/200 WWII kits aren't exactly thick on the ground! I'll probably try the GW wash technique on some 1/200 TBDs I have in the queue and see how it goes in the bigger scale too.

They look ace!

I started recently using enamel washes, and they are very interesting. Tamyia has some excellent panel liners (basically enamel washes) that can be handy, as they come with a tiny applicator in the cap.

The base coat of paint I did with an airbrush. And then hand-painted the minor details black, silver, and tail lines on the zeroes.

The issue I have with a full wash is all of the flat surface. I experimented on one of the wildcats using a thinned-down Agrax Earthshade but the staining effect was overwhelming.

Warlord is the manufacturer of the Blood Red Skies system. The models are nice but I have had some issues with the resin casts. I guess I got an early production line that had quality control issues. Fortunately, Warlord is a standup company and is sending me some replacement models. Easy to support a company that tries its best to take care of its customers.

Washes best applied over a coat of gloss varnish ( or Future and the like) particuly when washing anything painted with acrylics.
Acrylics dry with a very fine sandpaper texture so if you wash them the wash gets all over the surface and sticks. If you varnish the wash keeps to the recess and can be wiped off the flat parts if needed.
All you need is Arttist oils and enamel thinners, all the 'modern washes' are just that in expensive packaging and a premium prices.
I have a tube of Windsor and Newton black oil paint thats been on the go for 25 years.

Gloss varnish before washing (also best surface for decals). I find diluted artist inks work really well. Then Matt varnish to seal wash and decals.
