UVS: A War Transformed - The Straw Man 31/12/2023
« on: September 23, 2023, 08:57:47 AM »
So, inspired by the forthcoming A War Transformed rules, I picked up a box of Wargames Atllantic's Great War Germans.
https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2023/09/wargames-atlantic-great-war-germans.html
As a proof of concept, I have assembled and painted the first one.

I was guided by the article in the North Star magazine, adjusted to the paints I have in stock.
http://nstarmagazine.com/A_WAR_TRANSFORMED_1.htm

After an undercoat  of Citadel Chaos Black spray, it was painted with Citadel Mechanicum Standard Grey. This was highlighted with a mix of Citadel Mechanicum Standard Grey and Army Painter Stone Golem.
The gloves and mask are Citadel Steel Legion Drab.
The rifle wood work, grenade handle and parts of the entrenching tool are Citadel Rhinox Hide.
The pouches, belt and boots are Citadel Dryad Bark.
The Bread Bag was Citadel Rakarth Flesh.
The helmet was first painted Citadel Zandri Dust, then patches of Citadel Rhinox Hide and Citadel Death World Forest were added.

Metal work (rifle, bayonet and grenade head) were painted Vallejo Black Grey then dry brushed with Army Painter Stone Golem.
The lens surrounds of the gas mask were given a re coat of Vallejo Black Grey, then the lenses were first filled with Humbrol Matt White then Citadel Warpstone Glow.
Everything was given a light dry brush with Citadel Terminatus Stone.
The mask, helmet, boots, gloves, bread bag and woodwork was given a wash of Citadel Agrax Earthshade.

He looks fantastic man. I like the helmet and gas mask a lot.
Thank you for offering some GW color alternatives to the paint schemes floating around.

Are you going to do any more with the basing? I feel some folk-horror infused green grass or flowers would really help him pop, but that's just one direction
of course you could go in.

Thanks.

On basing: I am going to wait until I have a few more figures assembled, and the Crooked Dice/Sarrisa wrecked boats before deciding on a basing theme.

The two options are muddy (generic WW1 and recently drained Doggerland), or a more Aral Sea style sand and grass.

Those are great ideas. I'm so torn on basing. I'm definitely not doing mud, but I want either a sand theme or pastoral with flowers.
And it needs to be easy to do.
I tried the Mediterranean Base-Ready mix and it looks good, but the rocks are  a bit large.
The Pine Forest Base Ready is brilliant on my Warhammer, but may look a bit too dark / not enough green grass for flowers.

It's such fun sorting it out though.

Thanks.

Now I have no excuse for not cracking on with this project as I have received the book and the WA Great War British.

The book is very good (I will have some additional questions).

The Wargames Atllantic's British have been disappointing.

I am waiting for some Great War figures (at the post office).

Good news on the book. What is up with the WA British, I assume you liked the Germans?

I'm sticking to the metal Great War range for my infantry as well. Don't want to fiddle with assembly much. I'll go wild on all the other trappings -- my Witches, additions and trimmings, and of course Manifestations.   I am considering some Frost Grave cultists for conveners.

There a number of issues (many have been listed elsewhere).
Sprue image

The arms and weapons are strange. Unlike the Germans (which have combined rifle and right arm),

there are paired rifle and left arm - no identification of the corresponding right arm. As there are no other optional weapons, the design choice is a bit odd.
The blade of the entrenching tool is missing (my suspicion is that there was a plan to make it separate so it could be used as "armour", but it got forgotten). Carlos says the 1908 pattern webbing is incorrect at the back.
The gas masks have pipes that connect to the pack on the chest, but it is unclear which (if any) work with which body/chest pack.

I managed one figure, requiring later filling (I have not summoned the enthusiasm). I have a part built one and a mess of a body arms and weapon as I only have two hands and balancing one body, two arms and a gun exceeded my capabilities.

Any thoughts on what the end project will look like... just so we all know at what point you declare the project is spiralling out of control, because I can see you having some fun with this  lol

The plan (as much as it is) is as following:
Regular infantry from Great War.
British
The witch (which is a repurposed Squaller I made from the Wizards 2 sprue).
Crooked Dice May Queens.
Trying to work out a use for a Crooked Dice Straw Man.
For the Mindless Crooked Dice Corn Dolls.

Tanks and armoured cars.

German
The witch is a body from the Scavengers set with a staff arm and a pointing arm. The head is from the WA weapon add on sprue.
Flame thrower and T-Gewehr

Still some other things to work out.

The witches are photographed and hopefully I will get them on here shortly.
