Indian Mutiny advice needed
« on: September 24, 2023, 09:12:32 PM »
Hi all,

I'm sorry if this question has already been asked a million trillion gazilllion times. I have tried searching the forum but it's a weary process sometimes fraught with rabbit holes and temptations I don't need.

Anyway, can anyone point me in the direction of a decent, concise book on the history of the Indian Mutiny (1857-59).

I'm also on the hunt for a good painting guide too (not Osprey, nothing personal mind).

Many thanks.
Don't!

I thought David Saul's "the Indian Mutiny" was quite good, although it is the only modern overview I have read, as I am mainly interested in Delhi.

For uniform details, Col Mike Snook has an excellent page on his website here..

Many free, downloadable, books on the internet archive, if you are interested..

The Great Mutiny by Christopher Hibbert is an option.

Not the full mutiny but a good book to get a sense of it all, The Siege of Lucknow by Barbara J. Starmans if memory serves.

Certainly a colorful period to put on the gaming table - someday I may get enough of my stuff painted to do so.

I have both the Hibbert and David books.  Hibbert dates back to the 1970s, whilst the David book is from the early 2000s. I prefer the latter both for the narrative and a much better set of maps.  I would also recommend Willaim Dalrymple's "The Last Mughal" which tells the story of the last Mughal Emperor and the siege of Delhi and gives a more Indian-centric view of the "Mutiny".

The Last Mughal is excellent. It doesn't cover the entirety of the Mutiny, as it's focussed on Delhi, but it's certainly worth a read.

I'd second the Saul David recommendation, although Hibbert isn't bad either.

Amarpal Singh Sidhu has a newish book out on the Mutiny.  I have not finished it yet but he is a good scholar.

Also WH Russell has an interesting eye witness account of the second stage of the Mutiny.  Well worth getting.

Hibbert is good, as is Dalrymple.  Murray has an interesting book on the HEIC that includes the Mutiny.
