Egyptian Project Arab Israeli wars 67-73 update 5th April
« on: October 15, 2023, 09:57:16 PM »
As part of my Yom Kippur war upcoming game at the end of October I thought I had best add some more infantry to my Arab coalition. The  Egyptian infantry army collection will possibly get another Armoured infantry battalion, except for a few bits that are required, snipers and another two blowpipes and sagger teams, as always something missing  !)  order underway!

Planning on using able archer I think to keep it simple for my French mates.

The miniatures are all Elhiem miniatures form the middle eastern range. Really happy with my results, painting guide on my ww2-modern blog as normal.

Motorised regiment
1st battalion

2nd battalion

Armoured battalion

Airborne battalion
(I need to purchase some more bits here so I can do some head swaps so everyone will be in berets)

Vehicles being built, mostly Ace kits and some resin bits, plus more armour

Cheers
Matt

Very nicely done.  This is a period & place I've thought about gaming in the past and this is very good inspiration.

Nice to see some Elheim 20mm about the place! Especially some of his original sculpts!

Good painting too!

Thanks, not quite correct helmet for them, but close enough for me.

I have a bunch of kit coming up for Iraq war also which these chaps will double up for also.

Finally after returning from my three month holiday in Australia I have returned to the bench and started to complete my Egyptian transports and armour. The vehicles are 1/72 and are from ICM models.

First up some Egyptian transport

Cheers
Matt

Very nice work! Out of curiousity, how does Elhiem match (if at all) with the rereleased Foundry range?

Elhiem are finer but they are close in height

Next unit for my Egyptian army is a multiple rocket launcher mounted on a ZIL 131 truck. I actually need to paint my BM21 Grad launchers too.

I have only seen these in use for the 56 parades, they are listed in the 18th battalion but not used in combat use for 6 day war or Yom Kippur that I am aware of. I will use these in support of my infantry mechanised brigade.

Cheers

I really like the infantry and the ZiL trucks, but this Katyusha seems to be on a GMC chassis as the Soviets did in ww2. ICM offers it on a  ZiL-131: https://www.1-72depot.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/ICM-72814-box.jpeg

I think you'll find the better part of the Egyptian truck park of the era was made up of Zil-151s and Zil-157s including their MRL platforms (BM-11, BM-13 etc). To that end a Studebaker makes a decent enough proxy, although you could convert the ICM versions. So sad that the old Airfix SA-2 Guideline moulds were lost. They had a Zil-151 as the missile tractor.

Good looking project. I take it you are aware that Wargames Foundry made a dedicated range in 20mm? I had their WW2 figures and they are nice sculpts.

For an easy fix you can change the superstructure with one of the ZiLs- you will get a proper Cold War era Soviet Katyusha and a yellow Studebaker transport truck- those ww2 trucks were still very common in the 60s, no one will bat an eye to see one in Egyptian colours in the era you are aiming for.

Indeed. There was still a bit of surplus WW2 kit floating around in Egypt. I've seen photos of the Egyptian Army in the Yemen wearing M1 steel helmets.
