Blog Post - 3D design of Spaceships
« on: 25 October 2023, 12:32:02 PM »
Hi all,

I have been getting into 3d design recently and have been making a bunch of spaceships for my favourite game. Battlefleet Gothic!

Some of the pics I have up with exploded images of my designs.

I don't mean to be an arse Pikapoka, but if you don't even post an image, it seems like click bait to up the traffic on your blog.

I'm a very lazy clicker, but if you post me a carrot or two I might make an effort.

Oh, sorry I wasn't aware I was supposed to post an image. Just wanted to share my latest blog post as I thought it would be of interest to those thinking of doing some 3d design.

Happy to have this post deleted. I just tried but can't work out how. :/

Looking forward to seeing pictures of these printed out.  What is your plan for the flying stands on these?
If my wife asks, I only spent half as much as I wanted to...

All of the ships should be able to fit onto a standard BFG base.

Because I don't have a printer and so can't physically see these models, I have had to make my best guess on where to put in a pre-made hole for the flight stand.  Luckily I can be fairly flexible with where the hole is as the models can be fairly light (escorts/light cruisers).

Interesting stuff.

What's been your experience of the learning curve for this sort of design work?

I find it really interesting but at the same time daunting. Did you start from scdatch and how long has it taken you to get to where you're at right now?

I started dabbling around March, just doing bits and bobs during my lunch break at work and in the evenings.

I spent quite a while doing what I call digital kitbashing and only recently have been doing fully original work, which I find is quite difficult using tinkercad as it slows down quite a bit when you start getting complex. I really need to learn Fusion 360, which is the next step up but I don't have the time for that.

I think with tinkercad I just liked to put things together and see how they look, which is very trial and error. I wonder if maybe I would have been better off with actually drawing out a design first and then going on from there.

I really do like that long prow.  Very slick.

Nice designs which would fit well in Bfg.
Keep it up

Thank you. I designed these for bfg and followed closely the weapon profiles of the imperial ships

Here are some pics!

Thank you for the pictures.  All of the stl models that I have designed up to this point have been standalone projects, but matching up to an existing range's aesthetic is a totally different proposition... good job on tying those together.

Also, any updates on how these perform on the table would be very welcome.  I will not be playing BFG anytime in the near future, but always enjoy hearing about the game.
