Magan / Maka 28mm miniatures - does anyone make them ?
« on: December 17, 2023, 11:42:30 AM »
I'm wanting to do some mins (28mm)   to represent Achaemenid Persian satrapy of  Magan ( Maka).  I'm after this sort of look ...

Is anyone aware of any commercially available figures that look the part ?   The helmet is the most unique feature.

There’s nothing Achaemenid that looks like that. I’d be tempted to use the Old Glory Exotic Persians as recruits from eastern satraps…. https://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/prodimages/ppp/ppp16.jpg

You could try a plastic kit bash?

Perhaps, Victrix,

Carthaginian levy spearmen body
Gallic shield

Maybe a Perry 100YW helmeted head?

I’ve never heard of this Satrapy?

Magan/Makan was roughly modern-day Oman, and the image above is clearly derived from an Angus MacBride depiction of a 3rd/4th century AD "Omani marine" (I do not know what MacBride used as source material), so quite a bit later than the end of the Achaemenid Empire.  That said, if you want a similar looking figure I think the 100 Years War helmet (+ some Green Stuff?) and Gallic shield kitbash idea is a great suggestion, as I've seen no existing miniatures that quite fit that image.

Wargames Atlantic do a rather nice Sassanid levy spearman in the 3D digital print range.
Again using the head swop and Celtic shield?

Another idea for plastic conversions.
Gripping beast picts, plastic celtic shields and probably perrys WOTR or HYW helmets of that look.

I thought I'd seen him before! The Osprey illustration is actually of a Yemeni soldier of the 5th century AD, the Omani Marine is a different figure. The notes in the book for the illustration say that the helmet is early Byzantine and the shield "betrays Roman military influence". I very much doubt if this is the right look for an Achaemenid period figure from maybe 8-900 years earlier.

Yes!  Thanks for the correction.  I don't actually have that Osprey book.  Because I'm curious about it, does it say what the source/reference was for MacBride's artwork?

It is quite an old book dating back to 1991. The plate's sources are a 3rd century AD relief carving from Zafar , then in the Archaeological Museum of Sana'a, and some carvings from the Arch of Constantine .Why these help illustrate a 5th century figures is beyond me.
