The 4th. Doctor...
« on: December 21, 2023, 10:59:33 AM »
Very elusive fellow to glean in 28mm!
Fleabay rarely shows one, and a post on the 'wanted' section of our Bazaar failed miserably. So miserably, a delete droid exterminated it! We kind of wandered out of orbit, into a discussion of how tall Tom Baker was. Actually he was six foot two, same as Jon Pertwee, who he dwarfs in the accompying piccy!
Thing is, the Crooked Dice casting is so good, I'm persevering with it. As someone kindly suggested I've lost the slottabase and bunged 'im on a thin stand. He still measures 30mm from foot to perm top, but we'll see wot appertains when the paint goes on.

::)

Yep, I was eyeing up this sculpt in the crooked dice shop just the other day.

It is indeed a very fine thing, I was sorely tempted and I don't even much care for Dr Who.

Indeed gigantic, but very, very good, as they all are  :)

Jolly Santa brought me the 4th Doctor plus Leela and David Tennant.. they are I think the nicest figures Ive seen for ages.
But puzzlingly BIG.
The same sculptor has produced other not Who figures for CD and they are brilliant, but wholly in tune with the scale of the rest of their range.
Why the decision to go big NOW when there isn't even a Warlord range any more of that size.  Is this a one off or a policy decision?
I treat Crooked Dice as the gold standard against which I judge others and I wouldn't want them to start being incompatible with Black Trtee etc. That was one of the gripes some people had about Warlord.

I based them today, but think Im going to have to follow your lead and rebase on flat discs..pity as I prefer not to have to cut away the slotta bar.

[I didnt buy the 15th and Ruby ones only because they are based on a publicity shot for just one of the forthcoming stories and the costumes aren't typical.]

Big or not, Id love to see CD do more Temporal Travellers.

Hi all!  IMHO Black Tree are on the small size and so is the figure pictured against Temporal Traveller 4. That older figure really should have been bigger from the get go.

While we try to keep to everything 28mm (from base of foot to eye) we use a range of very talented sculptors - some traditionally putty pushers and others (like Ernst here) who sculpt digitally. So if you look closely there's some variation across the 1500 figures in the range, depending on their style. I know this is a red flag to some, personally I am more forgiving - but then I come from a family of short arses.

However, TT4 has come out a little bigger and that is entirely my fault. I wanted a particular pose and that required splayed fingers, which were just on the tolerance of casting. So we increased it (ever so) slightly to avoid casting issues down the line. That's given me perfectly cast fingers, but made TT4 30mm to eye - plus he bulks up with coat and scarf and big hair - which all adds to the impression of a bigger figure.

More of these on the way in the coming months.

I wonder how TT4 scales out against TWD:AOW?

Next up, after tonight's Tetley fumes wear off, is the Brigadier and some UNIT Troopers led by the steadfast, Sergeant Benton! These will all be from Crooked Dice, splendid figures, and a joy to paint.

:)
