One-Hour Skirmish Wargames with more than two players?
« on: January 21, 2024, 09:56:06 PM »
Having taken traveller's tip on One-Hour Skirmish Wargames last week, I wonder if it works with more than two players. From what I can see from searching the Kindle version, there's no mention of multiple players in the book. Has anyone tried it, and if so, how did it go, and did you have to make any adjustments to get it to run smoothly?

There are some good discussion in the fb group on this:

It seems the way to go is to give each player one deck of cards but only with one joker in each deck. I am amazed how fast and smooth gameplay is with this system. We had a game this weekend, a variant of the "Capture the gun" scenario, with 20 vs 20 miniatures in less than an hour

Great - thanks! I'm not on Facebook (though I suppose I could join for purposes of lurking on forums), but that point about the jokers answers one of my questions. I suppose the only other one is whether you determine the order of acting in a turn for all players or use a set pattern for fairness (if players are allied). The more random approach might be the most fun!

That looks a great game!

I am not so keen on fb either but there are an amazing number of groups for any gaming genre you can imagine which makes it really useful to attend. The group for this purpose also includes the author in the discussion which is really interesting.
For several players I would stick to the original rules. All players draw a card for initiative which sets the order for the turn.

Yes, good point.

That makes sense - and it also works fine for games when there are several players competing with each other rather than being organised into sides.

Have you tried any of the author's sci-fi scenarios (from the systemless book)? The paperback reappeared on Amazon the other day, so I have a copy on the way.

I am not much into sci-fi so I have not seen it. I would just hope there would be a future book with more historical scenarios like the ones in the rulebook  :)

We enjoy OHSW so much, we get a specific card deck for each period. Runes, Napoleonic, Wild West, WW2, German (Eagle) British (Union Jack). It's a tad anal, but seems to enhance the period 'feel'.

::)
"Wot did you do in the war Grandad?"

"I was with Harry... At The Bridge!"

Cool, did you design them yourself or are there commercial ones available?
