Best rules for
« on: 18 April 2024, 05:33:37 PM »
good morning all. I have been looking for a set of rules that work well for cavalry verses plains Indians in 28mm.  I took a quick look at Pony Wars but that seemed to be designed more for 15mm or smaller.  The way it looked to me you would need a table 12 feet by 20 feet if you wanted to play 28mm. I am hoping to find a set of rules that would work for an engagement of twenty to thirty cavalry on patrol or protecting a homestead verses plains Indians.  Any suggestions are welcome and any past experience doing that sort of game would be truly appreciated, thanks all.

Oh, look at the Fistful of Lead stable of rules (pun intended).  For your smaller fights, their core rules would work nicely, and their Bigger battles rules would work for your bigger fights.

Wot the Cap'n said, FFofL was designed for this kind of thing.

Thanks guys. I was hoping for something with a little more specific rules for this type of fight. I have played Fistful of Lead and enjoyed it but it is better for gang vs posse sort of games and more for tiny forces.  I was hoping for something like a cavalry patrol of say 25 guys vs 50 Indians. Any other ideas out there?

One of Osprey's Rebels & Patriots or The Men Who Would Be Kings had army lists for it, and that would fall in line with the figure numbers you're looking at, though so would FFoL's Bigger Battles.

Firelock Games' Blood and Steel could probably work as well, though I believe you'd need to come up with your own ratings.

Sharp Practice might work for you - theres a Pony Wars supplement in one of the TFL specials, though you could work something out from ACW stats in the main rulebook. I think the Blood and spectacles blog has some great stuff too. Pretty sure its blood & spectacles anyway!
