A new mapboard for campaigns

I've been thinking about the shift from pin board to magnetic whiteboard for a few years. A couple of months ago I invested one, choosing to radically up the size of my map board in the process. This led to to some problems (chiefly storage) that I hadn't anticipated. All sorted now and I'm happy again.

I thought I'd do a post on the problems I had and my solutions to them. Also why I think the move from pin to white was a good one.

No. It's from a series of A1 maps of Europe that are available for free online from Murat. They were all the same scale (from memory) and made for a huge, full compass, Napoleonic campaign. See link below:

How is the map fixed to the white board?

I simply used small 3mm earth magnets to hold the map and other sheets to the board. They are as secure as pins on a pin board - in fact I've found the easiest way to prize them off the board, once in place, is to use a bigger stack of 3mm magnets - saving on broken fingernails.

You can see them here - the small shiny metal ones. You can also see some of them stacked in this shot. The coloured ones are the same but painted.

Well done campaign system. Does the Murat campaign website have anything else besides the maps? It says it's a system but I don't see any campaign rules or order of battles.

I’ve only ever come across the maps on line, plus descriptions of the campaign by people who played/know someone who played. As I understand it, the Murat wargamer campaign was a colossal undertaking - basically fighting every theatre of the Napoleonic Wars simultaneously with a lot of players and their combined figure collections: Something far beyond myself or my group.

But, the maps are superb for a homegrown wargame campaign that requires point to point movement at this map scale. I remember getting in touch with the owner of the maps a few years ago, seeking to reproduce them on my blog so that people could understand what was happening and he was very gracious and helpful to me. Perhaps, if you want his rules, you could get in touch with him - no harm in asking. I’d help you here if I could but, I’m at a loss to remember his name or how I found his contact details (it’s an age thing). Funnily enough, it might have somehow been through LAF.
