Knaves, brigands,... REIVERS!
« on: 07 June 2024, 09:55:14 AM »
Somewhere on the Borders in late 1500s...

Miniature from the recent batch of Flags of War Reivers, background by Jon Hodgson.

I have 10 more FoW Reivers to paint and many more from other companies, so will be sharing my outputs here. I use them currently to play En Garde at the Liverpool Wargames Association and it's a lot of fun! Going to give other games like Flashing Blades and Border War a try at some point, but En Garde is just really fun! I'm working on a campaign-like string of scenarios, that I hope to share here as well, so please look forward to it!

Thank you!

Unfortunately, a bit of the paint chipped off and that's after I put two layers of matte varnish (Humbrol spray). I repainted it and it's all good, but I'm very, very miffed about it - can anybody suggest a good varnish?

That looks very good.

...can anybody suggest a good varnish?

I still do this:  LINK  (I take varnishing very seriously.   ::) )

Very nice. I've completed my Border Reiver collection using Vendel and Colonel Bill figures. Just need to buy some period buildings now. I still plan to try En Garde. Glad to hear you recommend them.

Orctrader, thanks for that, I ended up picking a Matt spray from Colour Forge as I like their primers, going to see what it does 😂

SJWi, I have both Vendel and Colonel Bill Reivers on the block - Colin Patton has his own style of sculpting that I gotta say, I just really find adorable 😂

I had about 6 games of En Garde so far and a few more as a ref (not necessary for the rules, but we run quite complicated scenarios) and I really like the rules. They are not written the best and we had to adjust a couple of things, but the meat of the rules - the combat system - works so well!

Buildings will be my next thing, I got a 3d printed ruined tower that will become a hideout/stash, but I'm not super happy with the quality - although it looks fine from a distance.

Wonderful.  I have a collection of Reivers (working on the Flags of War initial foot and mounted sets), which includes Wargames Foundry (including Swashbucklers and Sea Dogs), Vendel, and some (as yet unpainted) Colonel Bill's.  Have used En Garde - which are great fun - and looking to try Flags of War's rules (which look very good indeed).  I also have to paint my 3 sheep, ram, and cow, which will serve as "loot markers."

Excellent work! He's looking great. The backdrop really makes him stand out.

Thanks a lot everyone, alas, in a most ironic twist of events, I slightly ruined my latest reiver during varnishing 🫣🫣🫣

He is being repainted and should be ready soon! The other 9 chaps are almost done with basecoats as well, so I should be able to show them soon enough. Or, if any of you are in England and going to be at the Phalanx show in St. Helens this Saturday (the 22nd), come by the Liverpool Wargames Association stand and I will have some of them there 😁

Something I can show is a wee WIP on the ruined tower I bought 3d printed from eBay 😁

Metternich, I have the exact same combination of manufacturers that I need to go through 😂

The tower is almost done! Going to put more greenery on the base and the tower itself, but this will have to do for now. I also painted another reiver, the badass, two-pistols-and-a-warhammer-with-an-eyepatch Laird!

I also don't like the basing on either reiver, going to have to come up with something else - possibly smaller tufts, as the ones I have don't really fit on a 20mm square.

Enjoy the photos, I also attached a quick setup photo for those wondering 😁

I like the ruined tower. Looks like it can be a burned-out small Pele tower; perhaps the result of a "Justice Raid," or destroyed by Baron Hunsdon during the Northern Rebellion.  Who makes it (as I haven't been able to find it among the many Ebay 3d printing products)?
I have a nice Bastle House from Adrian Walls (made from the Sarissa kit); a Highland stone walled barn in 3d printing (in an L shape with thatched roof - really just as suitable for a substantial, single-story farm house); an a-frame, stone walled, thatch roofed house (advertised as medieval, but quite useful as a house for a poorer Border farmer); a 3d printed Tudor two story "cottage" with thatched roof (really a more substantial two-story house suitable for a gentleman's townhouse); and a card-built double Tudor house (really two houses built side-by-side) again suitable for a town.  Plus a few stone walls to demarcate fields and keep in the livestock.

The tower is by Jawar3d, I gotta say, you can see the print lines on it up close (you can see in some of the photos), but I really like it, it's a very sturdy piece.

I got some more plastic little outbuildings from Renedra and two Tudor MDF kits from Warbases. Gonna finish them up, hopefully soon 😅😂
