He is on the way, he lost track.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Hey ho I have measured the epic Romans and they are 16mm to top of helmet (not including the plume). In other words, pretty normal 15mm "scale". So I am wondering now about what other (metal) manufacturers will fit with them.
For now, I am just thinking about mounted officers and standard bearers, perhaps metal  Hannibal and Scipio?

James, the respective Roman / cargthage base sets have a Scipio Africanus or Hannibal Barca mounted figure as appropriate. The battle box has both. They are done in SioCast resin.

They also do two commander packs, some have felt a tad dear at £20 each, but the models look nice and there are more in them than previous Epic commander packs encouraging two figure basing. I have been pleased with their commander packs in other Epic periods.

If Chris can get hold of them discounted on pre-order, it would be worth pouncing on.

For metal, Peter Pig are on the ‘truer’ side of 15mm.

Thanks Norm. The whole project was has.been's idea so I was going to let him have both the personality figures in the box while I looked around for some others .
As you say the commander sets are a bit pricey although I have no doubt they will be top quality.
So you recommend Peter Pig? I will check them out.

Sally 4th does have the commander sets at a pre-order discount.
https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/product-category/epic-battles-the-punic-wars/

The resin command figures, for me are very much 'nice to have' rather than essential. There are plenty enough mounted generals in plastic on the basic sprues. For example, The Republican Roman Division box (which I'm painting up at the moment), is £31 RRP, £24.75 at pre-order discount from Sally 4th. It has enough models for a complete army for Mortem et Gloriam (Pacto) at around 2500 points. There are 4 mounted generals. I have placed two on a base for overall general and two one to a base as sub general.

I will double check when I get home, but I am pretty certain that when I measured the miniatures at the start of the project they came in at 13.5mm from foot to eye. Small 15mm figures may mix in OK, especially for generals and light troops, where you only need a few models on a base.

For me, what makes it different (and more attractive) than traditional 15mm is the ease of painting strips of models and the look of dense dense blocks of heavy infantry, 30 to a 60mm x 20mm base. I would be interested to see how many 15mm figures you could squeeze on to that sized base, and what they look like compared to these blocks?

This is a unit of 120 Hastati that I finished a few days ago.

Same unit from the rear

The 8 bases of Hastati & Principes painted up with some Allied Italian Infantry to there rear.
I am hoping that by the end of the weekend, I will have completed the Triari, Cavalry and the Velites and Generals so I can do a photo shoot showing everything you get in a Roman Division box.

Hi Chris, they may well be, but I don't measure to the eyes! They are 16mm to the top of the head.

This morning I completed the Republican Roman Division box set.
The last units to be completed were the cavalry and the generals.

An overview of the division from the front

The division from the rear.

In my hobby blog I have also taken some photographs of the same army, with same units and same number of bases using 28 mm metal Wargames Foundry miniatures.

My rough estimate is that an army built using epic scale miniatures is going to be about a third of the cost of one using 28mm plastic figures. This is another subject I look at a bit closer in my blog. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference, however I do like the look of 120 figure units!

Thanks for comparing. I really like 28’s, but for me, the visual of the Epic is better, you have done a really nice job on them.

I have the Roman sprue from the Wargames Illustrated magazine and I quite like their robust and easy handling nature, now really looking forward to release day.

One of the games (other than Epic Hail Caesar) I am planning to use my new epic armies in is, Mortem et Gloriam which is one of my favourite Ancient Rulesets.

I have put together an initial army list.
One of the things that I like is that you can play at different levels, with different number of bases as your collection grows. This army list is for Pacto, that does not need so many bases, in fact the Republican Roman Divisin box gives a whole army for Pacto (for less than £25!)

This morning I completed the Republican Roman Division box set.

The minis turned out great!  :-*

Just one thing... according to the Warlord website, the Roman Division has only one stand each of heavy and light Roman cavalry.

Yes... and no. They actually have 8 heavy and 8 light cavalry in set. I did cover this in my linked hobby blog article. You can build one base of each and have 3 left over, build two bases with 4 models on each base, or what I did which was to receive an extra sprue on cover of Wargames Illustrated and use the extra 2 light and heavy.
