Thanks for the review/work in process reports and notes on painting in you blog.
I think these figures certainly have merit and are probably a great product for those who just want a quickly painted army.  The middle rank of Roman heavy infantry is very clever.

I am surprised the Romans are in three ranks while the Carthaginian heavies are in two.  It dose make the cavalry look a little sparse, but there is nothing stopping someone using them at double depth.  I was also surprised that the triarii are treated the same as hastati/princepes.  Surely there would have been an argument to have these in fewer ranks to represent the smaller number of these troops.

Your painting is effective and clearly used a quick paint approach.  If someone was even more averse to painting it looks like these could just about be painted with a thick brush in a couple of broad strokes along all the shields in one go and then a smaller brush across all the faces and again with the helmets.

If they plan to bring out Hoplites I would be interested.

Indeed, and another option would be to use a can of coloured primer in majority colour and then quickly pick out a few pieces in different colours.

We must be getting really close :-)

I have just seen an unboxing video on YouTube. The Decals look really pleasing and the big battle box includes a board game of sorts, which is a paper map with the playing area divided into large squares, looks like a nice way to get a quick game going on the ordinary domestic table, with unpainted troops being fine to start with.

The boxed is FILLED with troops! I think I read somewhere that this is the biggest thing that they have put out in the Epic range.

Really looking forwards to this - good price, thanks Chris.

I have always been fascinated by the Trebbia battle and may years ago, did it in 2mm! I think my start with this set will be to collect together the forces for the Trebbia battle. this will give me a focus on a specific order of battle to paint. I might even bath-tub it down initially. I am okay with playing with unpainted stuff, while elements of it cycle across the painting table.

There is a very interesting video over on YouTube by 7th Son. He was sent some sprues by Warlord Games a few weeks ago and has been busily painting them up and has now put on a meeting engagement game, a scenario from the rulebook.

He does a lot of video action reports and their focus is gaming on the kitchen table, a sort of gaming for all approach.

If you are are on the fence about buying into this, I think his forces and table will tip you over the edge :-)

Hi Norm,

Thanks for sharing that link, that does look like a lot of fun.

Over the weekend I painted up a first base of Carthaginian War Elephants

I did take a slightly different approach. The crew were painted on the sprue, and the paintwork touched up when they were cut free and glued in place. I temporarily glued (using UHU) the elephants on to standard 60mm x 20mm bases to make painting easier. Everything was sprayed with Halford’s Auto Primer, Matt White and then washed over with a brown / sepia ink wash. When the ink was completely dry, I drybrushed Matt White acrylic over the whole model using a make up brush. I find that the brown ink wash does a great job amplifying the shade when you apply Army Painter Speedpaint over the top. It also puts a nice neat brown line around each part that helps to deliver a tabletop ready job with minimum effort.

Yikes!

Those elephants came out really nice!  :-*

This maybe the best set of epic minis that Warlord has put out.

That was my take on it, and why I've gone all in for Epic Punic Wars but not any of the previous ones.

It can't be easy to paint at this scale.

Thanks, glad you like it, but it is in fact really very easy to paint figures that look great in this scale, probably easier than painting 28mm figures.

I've put a step by step painting guide showing how to I paint them on my hobby blog.
It's all down to good prep with white primer followed by a brown ink wash, and then Army Painter Speed Paints.

The step by step guide is @ https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/warlord-games-epic-punic-wars-roman-infantry-painting-guide/

That's great. What are you going to paint first?
Do share when you've got some painting or gaming done.

Vodkafan & I received our package today.  :D :D :D

We were going to carefully work out what was needed for various DBA armies, BUT...
instead we just took half each (I got the generals, he got the Watch Tower).
NB
He has already started painting. lol

For no particular reason that I can fathom, Trebbia 218 BC has always been a favourite of mine, so I think I will start by specifically collecting and painting that order-of-battle.

I also do a lot of boardgaming and have a very nice take on Trebbia in GMT’s SPQR Deluxe module, so I will be running these together as a joint project.

The Battle Pack also has its own boardgame ‘Scipio’. So I am sure that will be woven in somewhere/

I have started a ‘project page’ on my Commanders site for anyone interested.

I simply love how a single battle in history can make a fellow hobbyist so focused on replaying it (and painting lots of cool toy soldiers). Very inspiring! Looking forward to seeing where this will end.

Just a quick update to anyone interested in Epic Punic Wars that did not pre-order.
We still have two each of the big £95 Starter Army Sets for Romans and Carthaginians left over from when we shipped all our pre-orders. These are still available reduced from £95 to £76, and we have a few rulebooks left at discounted pre-order prices as well.
