On Bloody Ground - Caesars Campaigns, out now!
« on: 17 June 2024, 01:34:52 PM »
We’re very proud and excited to announce that we’ve just taken delivery of the third book in the ‘On Bloody Ground’ series of Mass Combat Wargames Rules!

CAESARS CAMPAIGNS covers the period between 58 – 44BC during the late Roman Republic, and contains army lists for Caesarian Romans, Early Germanics, Gallic Tribes, Ancient Britons, Late Ptolemaic Egyptians, Late Pontics and Numidians.

Players are able to use a variety of generic commanders that each have the potential to impact the outcome of battle with orders and leadership options, or alternatively to choose characters from history such as Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony or Pompey Magnus, Ariovistus, Vercingetorix, Cassivellaunus, Ptolemy XIII and his interfering eunuch Pothinus, King Pharnasses II, or the ambitious King Juba I.

Add to this the wide variety of troops available in each army list, and the options to fight one off wargames or the big battles from history are at every players fingertips!

Each edition of ‘On Bloody Ground’ is a period specific 64 page A4 perfect bound mass combat rulebook, with common sense rules for movement, shooting and combat, along with a command and orders structure which produces a highly tactical, dynamic and versatile wargame, that is great fun for both seasoned gamers and beginners alike.

Caesars Campaigns has been added to our website:

https://www.wipgamesandminiatures.com/

And is available now, priced at just £15.00 plus P&P.

The front cover artwork for ‘Caesars Campaigns’ is by the amazingly talented Giuseppe Rava:

Seems to be another WAB-Clone. Maybe you can tell a bit about it to bring some light in the darkness of only a title....

Hi NurgleHH, the only thing that’s similar to WAB in OBG is the army sizes for a ‘standard’ game, how you make the lists (points per model,  plus equipment options) and the turn sequence (although this is common in most historical games).

We have commanders that can join units and fight, and most have an option for command points. These command points can be used to attempt to perform out of sequence manoeuvres which we call ‘orders’, or allow re rolls to important leadership tests to keep your units from failing important leadership tests. This allows for heroics from commanders that can keep a unit fighting beyond what you may expect, or pushing a unit to move into a position that your opponent didn’t account for!

Units are equipped, and perform, how you would expect certain historical formation to, with what we believe are common sense rules for these specific periods.

Combat is immediately triggered after a successful charge, and can go back and forth, pushing the lines of battle in favour of you or your opponent, this is where command points are useful to pass leadership tests on lost combats.

Shooting causes casualties, but won’t shoot an army off of a table on lucky dice rolls. No shooting attacks cause ‘panic’ in our game, meaning that freshly painted unit of heavy cavalry won’t be taken off the table on turn 1 when you fail all your armour saves on 1’s.

Movement is simplified and takes out minute movements. No wheeling and taking off half or a quarter inch off of your movement value, to manoeuvre, just pivot your unit in its centre point, move up to the max value and then pivot again if you wish (this is dependent on your formation, a Roman legionary is more manoeuvrable than a phalangers for example!)

And one thing that many people like. There is no fleeing units. Yep, I said that right. That fresh unit you painted will stay on the table until it dies, so there’s no curse of the freshly painted unit being removed on turn 1 anymore because of lucky dice rolls from your opponent! Instead, if you lose a combat, and the resulting leadership test, for each point you failed by you lose an additional casualty. This simulates the idea of mean running from the battlefield but stops the tedious and sometimes argument causing dodgy flee moves through units where nobody really knows what direction you’re supposed to be going in.

We also have historical characters in each period in the army lists. These aren’t game breaking characters, and some may even hinder your army in a certain way, but cost a lot less than a normal commander would. In our latest book we have Caesar, Pompey, Ariovistus, Cassivelaunus, Vercingetorix, Ptolemy, Pharnacces, Juba and others to add that extra flavour, and to allow you to recreate historical scenarios.

I hope this helps you out, and of course I will answer any other questions you have about the rules and mechanics you may be interested in!
