1/72 Greek mythology
« on: June 27, 2024, 03:39:21 PM »
Hi!
I start here a new topic about Greek mythology. I want to build a HotT army with mostly 1/72 plastic figures. This army will be a mix of mythological creatures and greek hoplites and peltasts.
Let's start with the mythological side (my favourite  :D):

If you're not familiar with 1/72 plastic figures, you must know that this industry enjoyed a golden age in the early 2000s. There were only historical figures originally, but some manufacturers (mostly Caesar then Dark Alliance) began to sell MedFan, then a few mythological figures something like a graal to me  :D

Let's focus on some of them. First we have a look at some Dark Alliance Minotaurs:

Most are painted with a classical color scheme, but I also painted a white one, which  can be seen as a boss or as an infernal version of a Minotaur (or even a demon). Dark Alliance also released a set of Centaurs. Here you are four out of six poses:

They even produced some Cyclops. This is one of them:

For the Amazons, I chose to paint some Linear A figures - very nice figures, too bad they didn't produce other mythological references:

I wanted to have a Hydra as a monster for my army, but there are none in 1/72 plastic, so I painted an old 25mm Ral Parthe figure instead:

And what about ancient Greeks? Oh yes, here there are:

Mostly Zvezda hoplites, with a couple of (very) old Atlantic figures, original ones bought in the 70s.

The same, with some peltasts:

Hope you like them  :) More pictures here:

Next steps: more figures from the sets already displayed, mounted Greek warriors and mounted Amazons, a Harpy (old Citadel chaos harpy figure), and maybe some Gods if I find some 25/28mm figures to represent them - suggestions welcome!

Oh yes, and basing of course.

Looking good so far  :) I didn't realise there was that much 1/72 stuff available for Ancient Greeks, and I've never seen any of the mythological figures.

Foundry do all the Greek Gods in 28mm, so are certainly worth a look (at work, so can't dig out the link). They are spread over two or three packs if I remember correctly, so there should be plenty for you to choose from.

Have done a similar project myself but not to that standard. Really really excellent work there, absolutely lovely.
Those nude Amazons are quite tricky to get now. Very expensive from Hannants.
I presume you knew Linear A have added Talos and the Argonauts. Also Greek gods to their future releases.

Beautiful work, as always, Philotep! You always do an amazing job getting the best from the 1:72 figures. These will make a great HotT army when they are based.

Lovely.

I'm really impressed with your work on these.  I always struggle with soft plastic figures.

Thank you all for your comments, always appreciated!

I was told just today on a french forum, but thank you anyway. Of course I will try to get these sets as soon as they are released.

No longer at work  :) - https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/greek-mythology

Thank you very much for this link, it might prove very useful if the Linear set is delayed.

Lovely work

Grubbys tanks now sell the old Chiltern (and SHQ) range of Greek gods, which I use in our Of Gods and Mortals games. They would be large against 1/72 figures, but shorter than the Cyclops figures you have, to give an idea of size.

Really nice work! Love the bronze, what’s your pant recipe for that?

Dang! I love seeing 1:72 scale projects. It's probably the scale that most inspires me. Incredible work here.
Your blog is fantastic!

Thank you very much, I'm glad these figures please you.

Really nice work! Love the bronze, what’s your pant recipe for that?

This 'bronze' is made of:
- a base of enamel Gold (an old Revell pot) - the last enamel paint I still use, all others are acrylics.
- a generous wash of Dark Brown (the ubiquitous Agrax Earthshade here)
- some enlightenments with the previous gold

That's all!

Dang! I love seeing 1:72 scale projects. It's probably the scale that most inspires me. Incredible work here.
Your blog is fantastic!

Nice that you like my blog. I've been visiting yours this afternoon, a lot of interesting ideas there, I add it to my sources if inspiration, thanks!

Lovely work!  I have several mythological armies I use for Ospreys Games Of Gods And Mortals which is a fun and easy set to play!
For Areas I'd recommend this fellow:
Masterbox 1/32 Greco-Persian Wars Series, Hoplite, Kit No 1 - MB32011 you can have him spear or sword armed too!

Thank you very much for your suggestion! It would be a big figure, but a god probably deserves it :)

I've been slowly painting some more hoplites for this army, which is now large enough to be played (once based) as a 130 pts army for l'Art de la Guerre - I've aded a few house rules for the mythologic creatures. Here your are the result:

The hoplites are now a mix of Atlantic, Zvezda, Hät, Caesar and Linear. I have painted all the shields since I'm not a big fan of transfers (some patterns were engraved, some weren't). A closer look:

This army has a Spartan general (already displayed in the first post), and a Theban subgeneral below:

I now have to base them, paint their opponents (the Mythologic Egyptians, including a god Avatar), and add some more hoplites. A never-ending story  ;)
