Where The Streets Have No Name
« on: 30 June 2024, 10:48:00 AM »
It's been a while since the Dave Marshall cityscape had an outing so a visit of The Regulars saw it utilised for an American advance into an unknown German city during the late war with the objective of clearing out the last vestiges of resistance and securing documents from a large government building.
The Americans were three full squads from 1st Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 399th Rifle regiment. 1st squad under Staff Sergeant Jim Amoroso (JC), 2nd squad under Staff Sergeant Gil Moriz (Bob), & 3rd Squad under Staff Sergeant Jim Gardner (Pete).
The Germans (me!) were a scratch force from 2nd Platoon, 1st Company, 1st battalion, 228th Jaegers comprising a command element under Lieutenant Thorolf Meyer supervising the clearing of documents from the government building and 2nd squad under Sergeant Rolf Steiner scattered amongst the suburban housing aiming to slow down the American advance.

First contact was 3rd squad who received a grenade in their midst from an upper floor window from "butterfingers" Helmut Jung who managed to throw his first grenade over his shoulder into the bedroom he was occupying  lol lol
Foolishly Jung decided to engage the GI's below him in a gunfight which he lost badly - scratch one German.

1st squad doggedly moved on, keeping their heads down and entered the occupied building from the cover of the high walls. Once in they heard movement from upstairs - an lmg redeploying in response to the GI's and so sent the rookie, Ray Fields, up to investigate - it's always the rookie  lol
As Fields came up the stairs the Germans fired off a panicked burst and missed Fields  :o
Now it turned into a movie scene; Fields at the head of the stairs frightened but still able to fire, the Germans unable to believe they missed, Fields then fired off two rounds from his Garand and dropped both of the team  :o 8) lol He isn't a rookie anymore  :)

On the main avenue 3rd squad had the difficult job of moving up what was a potential killing ground and did indeed come under fire from Corporal Graf with his StG44 from the building 1st squad were assaulting, one man went down but the combined weight of fire from elements of 2nd & 3rd squad silenced Graf.
3rd squad then began kicking in suburban doors and seeking better cover as another lmg opened up from the roof of the government building.

But what of 2nd squad I hear you ask?
Well half of them disappeared for most of the game as they smashed the lower floor windows of the apartment building they were adjacent to, worked their way through offices and corridors until they came to the windows on the other side of the building where outside was Sergeant Finck and Privates Keppler & Sajer in a perfect ambush position to cover the crossroads. Not so perfect now! The GI's blazed away through the glass and took down all three  :)
The other half of 2nd squad was on the street with 3rd using the cover as they advanced and returning fire from germans as they popped up. and

It wasn't all roses for the GI's however. As he waved his men forward from the cover of a destroyed vehicle, Staff Sergeant Gardner was shot in the back from the building just behind him that hadn't been cleared yet and died instantly. His squad froze, took cover and refused to advance any further. The Germans paid with their lives with fire from 2nd squad.

German resistance was in it's final stages now. Steiner and the two remaining men from his squad opened up from behind the destroyed tank in the middle of the avenue but it was all a bit hopeless and once Steiner went down the fight went out of the Germans.
Lt Meyer did manage to escape with sensitive documents but this part of the city was in allied hands.

Great looking table and a very fun read, but I have to ask - what was up with the Germans? Was it exceptionally bad luck, or were they labouring under some big disadvantage? It sounds like almost nothing they tried worked   :)

The answer to your question, from the allied side, was not fantastic planning, not fantastic strategy, just some fantastic dice rolls. I love the smell of a straight 20 on a D20. That’s a kill in these rules.

You're right; the initial odds favoured the Germans, less men but hidden and in cover but once revealed the numerical superiority of the Americans meant more guns firing at an individual target, that said the dice gods definitely favoured the GI's  lol
