Today, my local group played a very enjoyable game of Gangs of Rome, using the second edition rules. This was my first game using the new rules and I hadn’t played the first edition in some time, but the game was very easy to follow and went smoothly, except for a few boneheaded tactical mistakes. I thought the new edition streamlined the game a bit by simplifying some of the rules. It was very easy to play, even for the newcomers.
The group broke into two sides, with each player controlling two fighters each. The scenario we played called for both sides to try to collect bounties on the other side by collecting heads. Gang leaders’ heads were worth double the bounty.
As the game began, several fighters from both sides hid themselves by blending in with the mobs. The other fighters began maneuvering around the area to get within striking distance of the enemy. I had the gang leader for our side, a very formidable fighter. A rival fighter was spotted entering the marketplace at the center of the table. My leader ran straight at him and began to fight.
This turned out to be a mistake. I hadn’t counted on the enemies hiding in the crowd. Enemy fighters began jumping out of a nearby mob and charging into the melee. At one point, my leader was fighting against four enemies. Before I could get a helper into the fight, he was killed and his two-point head was lifted from his shoulders and carried into the concealment of the mob. Embarrassing!
To the east of the market, the rest of the gang managed to surround and kill a lone enemy. The last couple of turns of the game featured a missile duel with both sides throwing rocks and roof tiles at each other, killing a couple of the wounded fighters.
Here are a few shots from the game:
