Finding rules and minis for King Philip's War
« on: 02 July 2024, 02:22:59 AM »
As the title says, I'm looking for minis and rules to game King Philip's War.

So far I'm leaning towards Song of Drums and Tomahawks for the rules. I considered the second edition of This Very Ground but have found very few reviews on it and don't have much info. I also considered Flint and Feather but I think the period covered is earlier than what I'm looking for.

As for minis, Brigade Games have a range specifically for King Phillip's War. I like the minis from Crucible Crush (or maybe they're from Pulp Figures) but as they're made for Flint and Feather they may be from an earlier period. The only natives with firearms are 67011- Mohawk Warriors w/17th C. Flintlock Muskets. But even then, are these Mohawk sculpts interchangeable with Wampanoags and Narrangasetts? They also have nice European sculpts, but would these be period appropriate?

I'm excited to start this project and I would be grateful for any tips and advice.

I believe Parkfield does KPW.

I can't see KPW on the Parkfield website.
From what I know the Brigade range looks pretty spot on, with the Crucible Crush figures being much earlier (1620s-30s?). I know military kit soldiered on and clothing fashions may have been a few years behind the times but I would look elsewhere. Your problem is that the war is 20 years after the ECW and 10+ years before the League of Augsburg so none of those are 100% ideal.

I would look at Monmouth Rebellion "rebel" figures. Front Rank ( now Gripping Beast) produce a few packs and there must be others. I guess ECW "armed civilians" or later "New Model Army may pass muster as well.

Somewhat local gaming friend has run a bunch of King Philips War scenarios at local cons over the years.  If you're on Facebook, you can enquire what all he's been using (aside from wonderful scratch-built period houses!).

Here's photos from one of them:

King Philip's War would definitely work with Song of Drums and Tomahawks. And I echo the Brigade Games line being specifically made for it would be a good fit.

Good luck -- feel free to ask any specific questions about either the rules are adapting them to the conflict. We did so successfully, playing out the Beaver Wars (I know  lol) and the Pequot War. So, the mechanics can easily do the earlier period. See the links in my signature for the campaign books produced for those two conflicts (30 scenarios between the two books).

From what I understand, New England fashion was a bit behind Europe so I don't see how ECW figures would be too out of place. Cravats started replacing falling collars in the 1660s but the latter was still super common in Europe in the 1670s. The Flint and Feather models are too antiquated (those work better for Jamestown/Powhatan Wars)

The Brigade Games Range is superb. As I have always thought they would make good stand in figures for Monmouth's rebels, then I suppose the reverse is true. You could utlise suitable figures from Monmouth Rebellion ranges. League of Augsberg, Front Rank (now via Gripping Beast) and Dixon all make suitable figures, albeit the Dixon ones will be of the short-bothered, pumpkin headed varietyand won't mix well in the same unit. Just think of them as really, really, really West Country types. 'Ooh arrrr, me luvver' sounds optional.

You could also raid the ex-Copplestone North Star late 17thC range for more variety, and also use the odd ECW figure and/or maybe Buccaneer/Pirate ranges. I suspect the New England militias were fairly scruffy.

Here's a set of rules. I've downloaded them but not played. The price is right at the moment.

I have the 1676 rules and I think they are similar and maybe even more detailed than Donnybrook ( which is also an option for this conflict)

I use Donnybrook - it's a fun characterful skirmish game. I do have On This Very Ground, but wasn't overly impressed on the read through and have never actually played it. There are some suggested mods out there for Musket & Tomahawk too.

Brigade games are definitely the way to go. They mix well with Warfare/League of Augsburg. Firelock games do some appropriate miniatures in the Blood and Plunder line; but the integral bases are such that they'll probably only mix if you cut the bases off or they happen to line up with what you are using (i.e. 1ps or similar).
There was a unit of privateers on the Settler side; so you can definitely get away with a few pirates.

I have a sprue of the Blood and Plunder Militia and I cannot recommend these minaitures at all. I don't know about the other sets, but I think most of the poses are very weird, a lot of "crouching" and "mid-running" poses that are badly proportioned and don't seem to represent normally moving people at all. There are also clear mistakes in design (on of the militia's body has an incut on their upper leg clearly designed to accept some other part like a sword scabbard, but no part fits there - I emailed Firelock about it and they couldn't explain to me why it's there). You can certianly get really nice looking figures from those spres, but they are also quite large on the 28 mm scale, so won't mix nicely with many manufacturers. Also, they are considerably more expensive than most historical plastics.

I use Donnybrook for the French Indian War, and it would work just as well for King Philip's.

Actually, if I hadn't been setting the focus of my games in Sleepy Hollow (it was a cursed and haunted place long before the Hessian lost his head in the Revolution), I would have gone 17th century for Donnybrook and the Dutch invasion of New Sweden, Beaver Wars, and King Philip's.

Thanks for your comments everybody! I decided to try the 1676 rules as the price was most literally unbeatable. I chose to use Brigade Games' range for the pilgrims and the same for the Indians as well as those from Redoubt Enterprises. I'll post when I start the project.
