Does anyone make non-cartoonish 28mm Fallschirmjager?
« on: 04 July 2024, 01:41:29 AM »
They all seem to have either comically large heads or villainous visages. I like the realistic-ish and character-filled ancients made by Victrix. Is there a WWII equivalent?

May40 Miniatures have a really nice range, detailed and well proportioned.

Very nice looking. Not to be horribly picky, but will these work for late war?

The Crusader ones aren't what I would describe as cartoonish, not are the Artizan figures, which match well as they share the same weapons masters. Crusader do early war, Artizan mid to late although toy can mix some early war figures in with late. Foundry did an excellent range of early war German paras and there's also the Gorgon studios versions which were IIRC sculpted by Mark Simms who did either the Crusader or Artizan range, I forget which.

YMMV.

A second for Artizan and Crusader but also if you look through Warlord's range they still have some of the excellent Paul Hicks sculpts from the Bolt Action Miniatures range in there, especially support options.

Not really as they’re in early pattern jump smocks with weapons like the MP38 & MG34. None of the later war stuff (MP44, MG42, FG42) as far as I can see.

True but the ones with the Kar 98's could certainly pass for late war especially is you paint them up in splinter or marsh pattern camo.

There were German paras wearing the olive, step-in, jump smocks right through to the end of the war. You are quite OK to mix them in with figures with the later smocks and weapons.

They were all designed to represent the Fallschirmjäger that dropped over the Netherlands in... May 1940  ;)

+++EDIT++ and I'm genuinly wondering; which line of Fallschirmjäger actually is cartoony? All of the mentioned lines are perfectly realistic (even though the Artizan and Crusader ones have exaggeratedly chunky weapons, for survivability reasons)...

Perhaps cartoony isn't the right word. Heroic? The Warlord plastics have massive heads, and something about the paint-jobs on the website give them a comic-book look. It might be the large-painted eyes and black-lining.

The painted Aritzan examples on the website from the Ramcke are pretty villainous looking. Like they wouldn't be out of place in an Indiana Jones movie. They are all sneering and long-faced.

I like the Crusader ones, though they all look like brothers, if not identical twins.

Does anyone else make plastic fallschirmjager besides Warlord?

Plastic, no as far as I'm aware, but Perry also have FJ in their North Africa WW2 range. Only metals though, and I have no clue about the gear and whatnot (whether it's suitable for other theatres, etc).

My advice would be to get a few of each (you can likely find sprues of Warlord's FJs sold separately).  Then Paint them in your style, and see what your painting style does to them.

And I would second the comments about Offensive Miniatures.  I don't have any of their iFJs, but I do have some of their figures.  I like their proportions and sculpting.  Too bad Empress doesn't do FJs.  Paul Hicks would slay them, so to speak...
