Swedish UN peacekeepers in the Kongo, 1961.
« on: 13 July 2024, 06:27:27 PM »
A game I arranged where a half platoon of Swedish peacekeepers were sent on a rescue mission in a faraway mining town in Katanga province during the Kongo Crisis.

The players assumed the roles of 2 Swedes each and I was the Game Master. The players thought it was a war RPG and had no idea this would become something else alltogether.

First picture is of our heroes, led by Lt. Jansson, sent to extract the Belgian archeologist Dr. Baert and his family from rebel territory.

After arriving to the doctors villa, at first the soldiers find bloodstains and broken furniture. A dying french mercenary, lying on the top floor, informs them that bloodthirsty Baluba tribesmen assaulted and killed the security detail of which he was a part. They seem to believe the doctor is an evil wizard who must be destroyed. With his dying breath, he tells the Swedes the doctor left for his excavation site the day before, close to the miners village.

Our heroes drive their Willys jeep as fast as they can in the hope of reaching the excavation site before the rebels. They arrive at dawn and hear drums in the distance. The light of bonfires is seen between the trees.

After leaving their vehicle behind the peacekeepers advance through the forest to get a closer look at the events unfolding among the huts in the village. Suffice to say, this is not a scenario they ever trained for before being deployed to Africa…

A scene of utmost horror. Wild eyed madmen, fifty or so, are dancing around an abominable idol to the beat of drums and insane flutes playing.

Captives are herded towards a crude altar in front of the statue…

After some deliberation, our heroes decide to try to save the remaining captives and prepare for an assault.

A long and bloody battle begins and with only two casualties the Swedes manage to defeat the bloodthirsty cultists. But in the last moment, the doctor finishes the ritual and retreats to the church!

Only to emerge again, this time in his new form. Riding an indescribable abomination, he chases our heroes, killing several who did not manage to reach the truck in time.

Chased by the monster and firing with every weapon they can muster, the peacekeepees soon realise they lack the firepower neccessary and start to despair.

Until one player discovers the Bofors anti aircraft gun that had been on the board the whole time, hidden by bushes and trees!

The surviving Swedes (who happen to know how to use the Swedish manufactured gun), manages to reach it and fire only one shot before the abomination is upon them. They roll the dice and… it’s a hit!

The creature explodes and showers them with foul smelling goo. They are saved!

Looking over the absolute carnage in front of him, Lt. Jonsson can’t but wonder what he shall write in his report to HQ in Elisabethville…

The end.

Great AAR. This looks like a fun game with plenty of plot twists for the players.
